A 21-year-old Bakersfield man died early Wednesday after being shot near a downtown nightclub.
Darryl Demetrius Porter, 21, was pronounced dead at Mercy Hospital. He was taken there in a car after apparently being shot at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday on 20th Street, between K Street and Chester Avenue.
According to the Bakersfield police, officers responded to a disturbance at 20th and K. When they arrived, they saw a vehicle speeding away from the area. Officers followed it to the hospital’s emergency room, where the driver was bringing Porter.
After the shooting, the block of 20th Street was roped off for several hours, according to D’mitri Harrison, who returned at about 11 a.m. to retrieve her car. She had been in Hpnotiq, a nightclub around the corner from the scene of the shooting, when she heard people say there had been a shooting. When she went outside about 20 minutes later, the block had been roped off and the police told her it would be several hours.
A red truck next to hers that night had several bullet holes in it, she said. That truck was gone in the morning.
There were five yellow chalk circles on the street and three more on the sidewalk, which Harrison said marked where the shell casings were found, outside Serrano’s Furniture. There was also a hole high in the wall, and two places where the brick wall had been chipped. One of those places, at about chest level, had a yellow chalk rectangle around it.
