Messages of condolence from friends are appearing on the Facebook page of Cem Erbay, the young man who went missing in the Coromandel on New Year's Day.
They alternate with messages of hope that the body of a young man found in bushland in the Coromandel last night is not that of missing 19-year-old Cem Erbay.
The body was found in the area being searched for Erbay, in bushland near the entrance to a pine plantation in Matarangi.
Police have so far refused to confirm whether it is the missing teenager, who is the son of the partner of former TVNZ journalist Simon Mercep.
The cause of death of the man found is not yet known but police said last night they were regarding it as suspicious because the body is of a young, presumably healthy man.
This morning, Senior Sergeant Graham Shields said a police guard has been at the scene in bush near Matarangi overnight. He said police were still keen to hear from people who can help piece together events around the former Western Springs College student's disappearance.
Forensic experts are at the site today where they are carrying out a full search at the scene, before recovering the body for a formal identification.
Shields said the search for Erbay would be terminated once police are satisfied they've found the right person, and that police want to give closure to the family as soon as possible.
He said a number of people had told police about seeing Erbay in the area and that led police to search the bush where the body was found.

"Some of the people have described seeing a young man who seemed to be a little bit disorientated, who seemed to be lost and just seemed to be a little but out of place and that is what has brought him to their attention."
Messages on Erbay's Facebook page range from "Rest in Peace Cem" to "Come home" and "Still hoping for the best my friend".
Around 40 search and rescue staff, including volunteers, and police had been looking for Erbay who was last seen on the morning of New Year's Day.
He was reported missing late on Saturday afternoon near Whitianga and was last seen by friends about 4am Saturday after crossing the one-lane bridge on Wharekaho Road at the end of Simpson's Beach.
He was leaving a New Year's Eve party to walk home and police said he was seen getting out of the water on the other side. It is not known why he chose to take a short cut.
Police believe he was later seen around 10am, 20 kilometres away in Matarangi. Witnesses in Matarangi said Erbay appeared disorientated and was asking for directions back to Simpson's Beach.
Erbay had a heart condition that made it dangerous if he overexerted himself, and it may have made him disoriented.
