BBC News

By Andrew Walker
Economics correspondent, BBC World Service

The richest 2% of adults in the world own more than half of all household wealth, according to a new study by a United Nations research institute.

The report, from the World Institute of Development Economics Research at the UN University, says that the poorer half of the world's population own barely 1% of global wealth.

[...]

Wealth is heavily concentrated in North America, Europe and some countries in the Asia Pacific region, such as Japan and Australia.

These countries account for 90% of household wealth.

The study also finds that inequality is sharper in wealth than in annual income.

[...]

The survey is based on data for the year 2000. The authors say a more recent year would have involved more gaps in the data. As it is, many figures - especially for developing countries - have had to be estimated.

Nonetheless, the authors say it is the most comprehensive study of personal wealth ever undertaken.

Randomly watching that Jay-Z Water for life last night was sad. Even though his label might of had him do this and air it when his CD was coming out, the fact just a toilet helped that village so much is crazy. The shots of the infested water just laying everywhere with sewage in it, and flies landing in the water then on the produce and meat they're selling was sad. It was an eye opening show, and like it said eveyone praises being "FROM THE HOOD" but here in America we don't truly understand what being from the bottom really is. More people with $$$$ need to do simple things like Jay did.

Do things like Jay did? Like what? Be amongst the top 2% of the population that owns more than half of the world’s wealth? They should be more like hip-hop's most notorious capitalist? Please.

Jay-Z can have his cute little heart touching documentary but he is not capable of trying to understand the true causes of poverty nor is he willing to do anything about it. No, he IS apart of the problem. He may say things or donate money here and there and do other things to make himself look like a good man, all the while Hondurans work round the clock in a sweatshop making Rocawear that will sell for more than 1000% it cost to make.

Be more like Jay Z? LOL

Did you not read what I said. "Even though his label might of had him do this and air it when his CD was coming out, the fact just a toilet helped that village so much is crazy". Obviously it was timing for publicity for his CD. Jay-Z was only used in my example cause I saw the documentary last night. THE POINT was those people in a position of power don't help, and just alittle would go a long way in those countries like Africa. I give 2 shits about Jay-Z and have never bought any of his Cd's or his clothes, I'm not endorsing him just that deed.

^^so have I. I posted basically the same shit 4 or 5 times now in as many years.

@GTS,
Yep, I read every word. You stated, "More people with $$$$ need to do simple things like Jay did."

Simple things like what? Be apart of the problem and occasionally throw some crumbs at the poor? Be a super capitalist and wear a Che Guevara t-shirt on stage?

Bro you try and find negative in everything. The water given to the community helped out, nothing else about Jay-Z was praised. Did you see the documentary. Do you not see what my point still is?

Yes, I understand your point, "More people with $$$$ need to do simple things like Jay did." MY POINT is that you praised a man that is apart of the worlds problems. A money-hungry man that relentlessly exploits the poor, "at any means necessary."

More people with money should absolutely not do what Jay-Z does.

I guess I need to figure someone is gonna rip a part my post to find negative in it. I agree with what your saying, BUT whatever the reason he did it for doesn't blind the fact that those children will be better off with running water.

Im sure it bugs him less than the instant negative gag reflex you get from his viewpoint which you race to step on asap like some kind of GOM whack-a-mole.
Instant negative gag reflex...you've been deep throating too many pitchforks, devil guy. And the whack-a-mole thing sounds kinda good, I like that. So do I get like 500 tickets to spend on toys and prizes? If so, I'll spend the tickets on a stuffed animal and donate it to some bed ridden cancer patient who cries out for God...

yeah rich people should donate some of their time for the poor, but at the same time if we take it in our positions....it would be unfair...even though they have more money, tahts the ionly difference...their money can influence their behavior, etc....but does not change the fact that they should do this and that......

Yes it does, what good is it to have all that wealth and if you say that it's sad that parts of Africa is suffering or Asia etc. then you are a fuckin hypocrite. If you are rich, you are obligated to do some good work.

i bet the wealthiest 2% dont collectively experience more than half the happiness and joy. and the flip side to this is of course the oracle of omaha, he donated in one swoop more than all the little kiddies giving pennies to the salvation army combined.
