SAN DIEGO – A 30-year-old man who authorities say kidnapped and assaulted a former girlfriend was shot and killed by a San Diego police officer early friday after a high-speed freeway pursuit.

He kidnapped his former girlfriend from her home in San Marcos about 3 a.m., forced her into his four-door 2000 Honda Accord and drove off, police said.

At some point, he assaulted her. She later persuaded him to stop at a gas station on University Avenue near state Route 15 in San Diego's City Heights, where he guarded her while she was in a restroom, said San Diego police Capt. Mary Cornicelli.

When he grabbed her in a headlock after she came out of the restroom, a witness called police, Lt. Kevin Rooney said.

The man was trying to pull the woman into the car when a police officer arrived shortly after 6:15 a.m. The driver fled, alone in his car, and headed south on Route 15.

A pursuit followed a circuitous route to westbound state Route 54, northbound Interstate 5 and then back north on Route 15 before the man pulled off at University Avenue and passed the Chevron station where the chase began. With police cars behind him, he headed east on University, where his car struck another. He then crashed into a fence in front of a house next to a taco shop.

Two officers pulled in behind him and drew their guns. One officer was on each side when the driver backed up into their cars, crashed into the fence again, then reversed once more into the police cars.

Cornicelli said that after the man ignored numerous commands to stop, one officer opened fire.

The officer, who has been with the department for 14 years, was not immediately identified.

After the officer fired, Rooney said, the driver backed up a third time, pushing patrol cars into the street. Then he pulled forward and drove south on the sidewalk on 41st Street until he crashed into a tree. An officer used his vehicle to pin the car from behind.

The wounded man was taken to a hospital, where he died less than an hour later.

The woman was treated at a hospital.

Cornicelli said the woman had dated the man for about four months, but their relationship ended about a month ago.
