Wear a sweater, honor Mr. Rogers

PITTSBURGH - A tribute to children's public television pioneer Fred Rogers will include an effort to get people everywhere to wear a sweater on what would have been his 80th birthday.

March 20th is being promoted as "Sweater Day" to honor Rogers, who died of cancer five years ago. A sweater was his trademark garb on "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood."

David Newell, who played speedy deliveryman Mr. McFeely on the show, appears in a YouTube video that touts the event.

"Sweater Day" is the capstone to a six-day celebration planned by Family Communications Inc. of Pittsburgh. Rogers created the company to produce his show.

The best was when Mr. McFeely would come with a film about the crayon factory or how they make saxophones. I was never into all that puppet shit – hand puppets weren’t cool when you could watch Muppets instead.

My 22-year old mentally retarded cousin (I.Q. of about a 2-year old) loves watching this show. Whenever I babysit him, I get stuck watching this show because he loves it. I can't stand it and when I've asked my mom why she never had me watch Mister Rogers, she says it looked too boring for me. Sesame Street was more entertaining, and I'll still watch Sesame Street and be entertained.

Wasn't Mister Rogers in the marines or some other military branch when he was younger?
