South San Francisco artist and a member of Deep Sleep Records is back with his sophomore solo album after 3 years since his debut dropped. For those of you who're not familiar with Redrum's style I'll remind that he's representing very unusual rap sub-genre. His music is filled with abnormal, twisted and often even suicidal visions. This emcee brings the darkest and most evil human thoughts to the daylight.

His first project called "Voices In My Head" was, let's say, gently saturated with the themes presented above. "Dear Satan" - his second endeavor - is entirely dedicated to the gloomy atmosphere and refers to many bloodcurdling topics. Some of you might not enjoy the stories from this cd at all, some might find them even offensive or blasphemous. Nonetheless it is one of the most dreadful, and at the same time interesting, albums of contemporary Bay Area rap.

To begin with I have to clear out what the title might wrongly suggest. It is true that Redrum is not inflamed with respect to Christianity and he even encourages to burn down the churches and exterminate priests, yet he's not directly praising Satan's religion. It's more of a conversation between his lost soul and Lucifer. In the title song he's begging the devil to take him to the depths of hell and punish him for the evil he's done on earth. Redrum is also talking about finding no purpose in his life and he is giving us merciless images of his own suicidal death. What's even more intriguing the album is opened with a nightmarish song about Cthulhu mythology*. So thematically we deal with something totally unparalleled - an inner dialogue between the good and evil side. The freaky tales are not only told by the host but also his insane guests. It is proper to emphasize appearances from Lefty, who has supremely fit into the vibe of "Dear Satan". Let me quote one of his sick verses:

I'm thinking 'bout suicide, I got mental pain inside,
I think it's just better if I take my own life,
I'm fighting bad feelings that are eating up my mind,
Got a gun to my dome like I'm dying tonight.

Except for Lefty there are also ADR Lavey and female rapper Razakel who brought you the additional creepy stories. Speaking of Redrum's rap delivery he's characterized by a deep, depressive and monotonous voice. Most often he's rapping fast, yet clearly. Very decent vocal side is completed by a perfect musical background, which is mainly handled by Deep Sleep Records' producer - Sleepy (22B). The only exception is "Gun To My Head", which, equally great, was composed by Lefty. I was truly amazed with the quality and workmanship of the beats, in comparison to previous releases that Sleepy participated in; it is on the whole other level. The music is filled with solid and vivid bass lines, while the sample loops are melodious, unique and uncanny. What's more, the leading producer proved his innovative talent, while making beats for "Psychotic Infatuations Pt. 1" and "Pentagrams And Bloody Eyes" where guitar and drums were used. More mild and soft sounds were served on the second half of the cd, where you'll hear such anthems like "You're The One That I Hate" or "Psychotic Infatuations Pt. 2". The project (especially its second part) might even seem boring to some of you, yet in my opinion the whole album has got its own, extremely unusual ambiance. Not that I'm completely approving such peculiar lyrics, but the unconventionality and professionalism made this record special. Highly recommended to all Deep Sleep fans.

*Cthulu mythology was created by an American writer H.P.Lovecraft (1890-1937) who has made up a whole idea of horrifying deities, who are waiting in the underwater abyss to wake up and rule the world one day.

Watching Northern Cali Latin rap scene expanding we can easily observe how it's dividing: for the East Bay and West Bay camps. I'm not trying to tell you these two crews are competing with each other, they're just more attached to their turfs. We can say that West Bay Homeboy community is younger one and of its representatives are artists like Sleepy Santino, Mousie, Pistol Cee, Lil Duce, Goodfelonz and Redrum, who's debuting in 2005 under Deep Sleep Records' belt.

Redrum is rather a rookie of the Bay Area rap scene, because I haven't noticed any appearances by him so far, which doesn't obviously mean that he's a raw, unexperienced MC. He's representing South San Francisco in the 650 area code and I have to admit he's got his very own, unique style. Some would say he's just another average rapper, who's not really standing out from others or even call his flow monotonous. However it's not the voice that make him stand out from the crowd. More important is the atmosphere, lyrics and the whole idea of the cd. Redrum's heavy and depressing voice is just a part of a dark and sick side of "Voices In My Head". Rapper's main goal is to share his deepest thoughts and precious observations with his listeners. He's depicting a world of a desperate man, trying to cope with unsolvable problems, who's reaching for a razor or other suicidal tools to end up his miserable life. Except for those very personal, dark anthems we'll also get a bunch of songs about representing the streets of Northern Cali and a few with strong sexual content. Aside from Redrum, whom I'm really feeling, there's a lot of guest appearances from homeboy rappers. Most of them have come out very decent. I can't forget about producers, who created this great music. Sleepy (22B) did most of the beats, while J Boogs made the rest. I'm not going to say it's clean and mainstream, as we can often hear a garage quality, yet the melodies are very sophisticated and catchy. Twisted, sick and sometimes even thrilling sound of "Voices In My Head" is mainly delivered by piano and pipe imitations. I'm recommend this album to the chosen few: those who're going to handle unusual lyrics, like dark and somber music and will not be bored with Redrum's monotonous flow.
