I was in the same boat months ago dealin with the same amount of money....

I got the AKG 200 and it works beautiful....I mean real great sound....I also got the mogami cord cuz i didnt want the cord to be an issue if i went with a cheaper cord...I bought myself a popper stopper and a micstand also.I bought the alesis i0/2 usb interface. It came with cubase but I actually use sony acid 6 to record all my vocals.Im just comfortable with that program. For headphones I got Audio Technica ath-m40 studio phones.I ordered my stuff from sweetwater and zzsounds....both had what I needed and everything has been working great.I record just about everyday and now i dont miss any oppurtunity to create my own projects,do drops, features and what ever else i wanna record....

My audio interface has phantom power so I plug my mic into that there..I also have my turntables hooked up toit......I plug the alesis into the usb withthe cord and then open acid...then I go to options and choose the audio interface and im ready to record...I need no firewire card or anything else......
