Nope, it is the same thing actually. Get a good signal to noise ratio and levels going through, compress while tracking or compress afterwards, but if the person has a really strong dynamic range you should probably record with compression to tame possible peaks and have the person back away from the mic at strong/loud parts.
For the hook parts or over dubs you can switch the axis of the mic or change the position of the mic to get a different sound, but there is nothing special you need to do.
