Sonar should be fine. As long as you're using a decent multitracker, it won't hold you back. The more important thing is that you know and use good recording techniques. You also want to use a good soundcard with a decent mic and preamp, but the MOST important is your skills as an engineer.

if ur gonna record vocals into sonar or whatever program and take the vocals into another studio for mixdown, make sure the studio ur taking it to has the same software u do.....or else u gotta take em a bunch of wave files and when u get to the studio u gotta open each wave file one by one and u gotta arange the vocals all over again and thats extra time spent....best thing to do, especially if u got sonar, record ur vocals, arange em and shit the way u want, export em to a OMF file and take em to any studio that gots Pro Tools and the shits already arranged ready to mix.. but yea make sure u got a descent pre amp
