anyone here who has recorded and mixed an R&B song, is there any techniques and/or tricks that you use that you don't use in your rap mixes...i know thar as far as recording vocals it depends on the artist and the song as far as lead and backup vocals, adlibs, etc...i'm mainly looking for tips on mixing...

Try putting a stereo delay on the verse with a little reverb just barely audible. Just to wet it up . When I mix RnB I usually will have them record a ton of tracks for the hook , so you can pan em out real wide. I also boost the high-end on the vox just to make it a bit brighter.

Not much difference in how I'm tracking and mixing the instruments. For vocals, I agree with Vince. Delays and verbs, and alot more tracks dedicated to to lead/backing vocals. For example: more comping on the lead vocal, and on the backing vocals I might do 3 or more tracks for each part (4 part harmony may total out to 12 or more tracks).

My advice would be to make sure you "carve out" a space for your vocals (slective eq cutting, and multiband compression) so that they don't compete with midrange instruments for breething room in your mix.

What's already been mentioned is a good starting point. Whatever you do, don't rush yourself. I generally spend a lot more time on R&B mixes. Trust me when I say, being picky pays off. Sonically and literally.
