ITT provide a movie type, or an example of a movie you really like and have other similar movies recommended to you.

My favorite two movies are Eternal Sunshine and American Beauty. Both of which deal with the intricacies of life and leave you contemplating existance, the way you live, and the way things are (the norm). I love movies that make you think! Not necessarily about the movie itself (though, that is fine) but outside of the film entirely. These movies can be described in other ways but I'm trying to sum it up as much as possible. Another example would be Donnie Darko.

Can anyone recommend me movies similar to these ones?

Off the top tho, I think Jacob's Ladder is a good fit with the three you posted, as far as how it makes you feel & think after watching it..

Check "Synecdoche, New York" if you haven't seen it yet. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0383028/
Written and directed by the dude that did Eternal Sunshine. Weird shit.

The trailer doesn't do it justice but here it is.

When I was a kid me and some friends rented this because one of them said they had heard it was a good horror movie. But at that age none of us had much of a comprehension level for movies like this. Needless to say we turned it off. That was a long time ago so I'm looking forward to trying it again. Plot sounds very interesting.

Man, I am a Charlie Kaufman advocate! I created a thread dedicate to him found here. Nonetheless it is a great recommendation. One of my favorites movies - I should have included it in my original post.

I make no guarantees that you’ll like these, but here are some ideas:

Thumbsucker
Wrist Cutters
Everything Is Illuminated
I've seen Wrist Cutters, it was decent. I'm gonna look into the other two. Thanks.

have you seen Adaptation? think it kinda goes along with eternal sunshine
Honestly, as a huge Kaufman fan I am almost embarrassed to say that I have not seen this movie. Especially considering it is supposed to be one of his finer films. I've made several attempts to DVR it but it keeps getting scrambled. I'll probably watch this one before anything else. Thanks for reminding me.

LOL the whole time I wrote that post I was thinking "I think this may be the guy who started the Kaufman thread." My bad. I watched Synecdoche, New York because of that thread and have recommended it to a bunch of people. Good shit.

Watched Adaptation a couple nights ago and thought it was a good movie. Not great, but good. The premise is very clever and, as expected, is abound with originality. I especially recommend it to the picky anti-hollywood posters in this forum. If you have not seen Adaptation, Kaufman is more or less making fun of the typical Hollywood movie-making mentality; ie. explosions, guns, chases, etc. which are prevalent in mainstream movies. I am aware that many of you also do not like Nicholas Cage, but just as I've read elsewhere (some other site), Nick Cage seems to be at his best when he plays a deadbeat (ie. Leaving Las Vegas) and this movie is no exception to that idea. Probably the easiest Kaufman screenplay to follow. With that said, just as with all of his other films, it is likely to require a second viewing.

7.2/10

Staying home a couple of days from work with the stomach flu.

Watched The Fountain last night and really enjoyed it. Some of the visuals in this film were dope! The story didn't connect very well after the one viewing but the overall message was pretty clear (even then it took a little research).

I'm about to watch What Dreams May Come (I've actually wanted to watch this for sometime regardless of how it was accepted), and after that it's Fargo, which I still haven't seen; heard great things about it, though.

Has anyone seen Little Miss Sunshine? I keep reading rave reviews about it but every time I read the synopsis I just get turned away. I guess there is no true way of evaluating a film other than watching it. Has anyone actually seen this?

Any thoughts, recommendations are welcome..

I've seen little miss sunshine, it was ok I guess, over rated for sure imo. It's a quirky drama, bordering on black comedy, but doesn't execute that aspect well.

I think a film that's close to but not really too similar to Eternal Sunshine would be Time by Kim Ki-Duk. It's been called South Korea's answer to Vertigo. It's a thriller/social commentary on plastic surgery which is fairly common in the S. Korean culture I guess. Deals with romance and obsession as well, so similar to American Beauty loosely as well. Good film imo.

Little Miss Sunshine is a great film, definitely worth at least a single viewing... Should check out Primer if you haven't seen it. Small budget independent flick, shorter film as well but if you are looking for something engaging, can't go wrong.
