For someone that's real comfortable with step-sequencing drum and keyboard parts, I guess it can be quick. It also can allow you to "play" things you ordinarily couldn't play in real-time.

Me, I'm not used to it, I prefer real-time programming so it would take me a long ass time without a midi keyboard.

I guess you can actually do real-time sequencing with the PC keyboard, but that sounds painful.

You could get away with anything, starting around $60 bucks I guess. Look around the house, some of those old cheezy casio keyboards have midi, you can turn off the cheap sounds, by just turning the volume down and it's a fine midi controller.

I'm talking about those small to big plastic casio and yamaha keyboards with the built-in speakers, so if you don't have the cash now, borrow one of those from somebody or get one at the flea makret for $15. I see those all over not being used in people's houses! look at the back for a midi in and out and it's all good.

If you had money, I'd recommend spending 100-150 for something half decent like M-Audio or Edirol (they both have a couple models in that price range). Thosee will give you slightly better feel and build and also some knobs and faders which you can use to automate things in Reason. This is a good thing because when you do that and get used to it, it makes it a lot faster to tweak things instead of fucking with a mouse over some tiny-ass virtual knobs all day. Also, you can do man amzing things with them depending on what you assign the buttons and faders to do.

honestly though, those are made of shitty plastic too, but they should be good enough to several years at least, unless you're in and out with it all the time and banging it against shit. I got a broken key on my Oxygen that stricks straight up but still plays, from when my wife slammed it under the table, so i guess they're kinda sturdy.

end of ramble

BTM...I have an M-Audio Radium 49...and they only run about 139.99 brand new...and I've seen used ones on craigslist for less than 100...

Cheap..and they get the job done...I like the knobs too..like strategy said..those small ass virtual knobs in Reason are a little harder to fine tune...the Radium 49 I have is only about 30 inches across too so it fits on the computer table perfectly.

Good looking out, that controller does look nice. Seems simple, yet effective & advanced enough and for only 139.99 like you said, that ain't bad at all.

How is it though, is it durable? Like I hope the keys, sliders, knobs ain't all flimsy and easily breakable. I'm hoping everything is kind of stiff, but yet glides smoothly, you know what I mean. I've fiddled with an Oxygen8 before at school and it was pretty solid in terms of it's feel and durability, hopefully this one is too.

Also, how about the Latency? In other words, is it quick and responsive? Like you press a key or move a slider/knob and it instantly takes action without any noticeable delay. No lag?

I guess that has more to do with the USB, but I do have USB 2.0, so that's good. I'll be using USB connection if I was to get a midi controller like this one.

Pretty simple to setup as well, just plug n play and select the midi controller in your host?

Thanks, sorry for all the damn questions. ha, I'm a novice at this $hit.

i just went to the musical instrument section of craigslist and searched for "midi" with a max price of $50 and found a 2 octave Oxygen 8 for $44. under $100 there are a lot more.

The Oxygen 8 is a fine piece, but can be hard to make work initially! I think Version2 is a lot more compatible, I have the original, and had severe installation probles on two different machines, so if you get it, let me know if you have trouble with the install or any USB issues. specifically, it's a USB 1.1 device which seems to give certain laptops USB ports problems. The other general problem I had with it (both on XP) is that it likes to re-install itself if you use a different USB port than the last/first time you used it. the workaround there (on my laptop) was install it on all physical ports, then I could plug it into any port moving forward without any surprises.

Maybe just me, might work perfectly for you with no problems

That's a good price, assuming it's in good shape

Its held up pretty well...seems pretty sturdy...no knobs have popped off at all, and the sliders seem pretty durable.

No latency, in my experiences...everything seems to be in realtime.

Plug & Play...its very simple to set up...you just go into your Reason preferences and add the board as your controller.

All good man...I'll share the little knowledge that I do have...I haven't been at it too long either, so I'm always learning things too..
