In what’s shaping up to be a landmark fight, former WBO heavyweight boxing champion, “Merciless” Ray Mercer, will face famed street brawler, Kimbo Slice, at The Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on Saturday, June 23rd.
Q. First of all, what made you decide to take a fight under mixed martial arts rules?

A. I haven’t boxed in almost two years. This is something I have always wanted to do. I don’t have too much going on right now so I thought I would give it a try. This is Kimbo’s first MMA match too, so I felt it would be a good fight.

Q. This is the first time in history that a boxer of your caliber has done something like this. How do you feel you will handle yourself in the cage?

A. I think I will do well. He will try to duke it out with me until we hit the floor. When it comes to punching, I have the advantage.

Q. Do you feel, in some way, like you are risking the credibility of boxing as a combat sport by taking on this challenge? In other words, if you lose, people will say 'See that, MMA is dominant over boxing.' Your thoughts on this?

A. I really don’t care what people say. Ray Mercer is going to do what Ray Mercer wants to do. Mohammed Ali fought a wrestler a long time ago and it didn’t tarnish boxing one bit. I believe a true champion should do new things and not be afraid to put it on the line. I’m doing something that no one else has done.

Q. What do you know about your opponent Kimbo?

A. Well, he doesn’t really have any boxing skills, but he’s tough and he hits very hard.

Q. How effective do you think a good street fighter can be in prize fighting?

A. Standing toe to toe with any man you can get tagged with a lucky punch. But in this case, I feel I can hold my own. He doesn’t have any ground game either, and I consider myself streetwise too.

Q. What do you think Kimbo's chances are against you?

A. Like I said, he hits hard, and he throws those wild hooks, but it comes back to the boxing skills and his lack of experience. He is built and very strong, but it takes more than that.

Q. A lot of top boxers like Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Antonio Tarver have been critical of MMA, saying that its nothing but a street fight that takes minimal skill, at the same time saying boxing is an art that takes a certain level of athletic talent to succeed at a high level. What do you think about these statements?

A. No disrespect, but I think they are wrong. You take guys that have been doing MMA for 10 or 15 years, I don’t think a boxer could beat them. In boxing, you have a Ref that stops the fight if they fall, but as soon as an MMA match goes to the ground, the boxer is out of his element. On the floor, they can elbow or knee you. It does take a lot of skill to be a boxer, but that’s true in any sport. It takes a special kind of individual to fight MMA. I love boxing, it’s my sport, but this is totally different. Each has it’s place.

Q. Is this a one shot deal for you as far as MMA goes or are you looking to establish yourself in the sport?

A. I won’t know until we see how this one goes. I am taking it one step at a time. I am kind of old to start a brand new career. That’s extreme, but not impossible.

Q. Do you have any type of training in grappling?

A. Not at all, but I ‘m a big fan of wrestling. I’ve been watching it for years.

Q. What happens if the fight goes to the ground?

A. I do have a guy that I am working with. He is helping me with my base and defense, etc. I am working also with a guy from American Top Team.

Q. Anyone you’d like to thank?

A. Yes, thanks to my sponsor, Bobby Farrell, the President of First Valley Funding. And, to the fans, I am living my dream, doing what a man has to do. But please remember, boxing is my first love.

I met Kimbo in Vegas. I said whats up to him and felt like such a fan boy since nobody in the place knew who the hell he was. Put my hand out to shake his and he just stuck his knuckles out and gave me daps.

As much as I want Mercer to win, I think Kimbo takes this one.
It's not like Mercer has a serious MMA background. Kimbo has a beard, so he should be alright. Anything can happen though.

Don't get me wrong, as a person who had his share of bare knuckle street fights I can tell you that Kimbo knows his shit. He's not just size and power.
But against a veteran professional boxer who's gonna stick a jab in his face, Kimbo's gonna have a very hard time finding Mercer. Not to mention Mercer's conditionning. All those are factors Kimbo doesn't need to worry about in a bare knuckle street fight.

Kimbo's gonna have to come out swinging hoping to catch Mercer early.

Smartest shit any boxer has said recently pertaining to MMA. Kimbo can get down that's all I have to say. I can hold my own pretty damn good and got the size, but I can honestly say I'd get knocked the fuck out by dude lol. Shit in that first fight, dude was punching him in the throat and dude didn't budge!

On the ground, its a toss up. Neither one of these guys is going to be really well versed.

But standing.

Mercer is going to punish Kimbo. If you saw Mercer's last fight with Shannon Briggs, he popped that jab in his face everytime, even though he got knocked the fuck out...he showed that he still had the skills. And that was against a world class boxer.

Here's an interview of Kimbo Slice:
LOS ANGELES, CA, MARCH 26 - A relative unknown in the professional boxing world, Kimbo Slice is anything but unknown to mixed martial arts (MMA) fans. Slice has been propelled to rock-star status, with a series of raw footage video clips that show him in bare-knuckle brawls and sometimes taking on two opponents, back-to-back. With a knockout style reminiscent of a young Mike Tyson and an intensity parallel to many world champion fighters, Slice has attracted fans from all over the world who crave to watch him in action.

Characterized as an underground street fighter, Slice will be taking on former Heavyweight Champion Ray Mercer on June 23rd at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City in an MMA Cage Match. In an exclusive interview with touchgloves.com Slice talks about his upcoming fight, his training and more.

Kimbo, thank you for taking the time to do this interview. How did you get started in the backyard-style street fights we've been seeing over the Internet? The backyard was just a location that was picked. It was a personal beef between the guy and myself. It was a location that was picked and it started the whole backyard theme.

Do you have any formal training in boxing or mixed martial arts?
No, no I don't. I've had a lot of fights on the ground. You know, a fight is a fight, you are as good as you are.

A lot of the videos show you having a boxing style. With the upcoming fight against Ray Mercer in a Cage under the rules of the New Jersey Athletic Board, are you now looking to change your style towards MMA?
I'm gonna bang it out, he wants to bang, we are gonna bang.

Have you ever considered Professional boxing?
Considered it. I've thought about it. But MMA is the next wave, its the new era. If anything I'll stick with MMA. I wouldn't box because its [MMA] is closer to the real thing. If I can do the real thing, its better.

Sounds like fighting Ray Mercer is not a one-time deal and you will continue to fight in MMA in the future.
I love fighting. I will do whatever I have to do as far as training, and getting myself to that level so that I could continue and look at it as a career. This will not be my only fight.

What are your thoughts on Ray Mercer and have you watched his past fights?
I mean, you know, he's fighting. I would never disrespect anybody or underestimate anyone. I have respect for everyone as a fighter. Especially as a professional, he's a professional boxer. I give him all the respect in the world as a fighter. When two men get in the ring, the best man is gonna walk out of there. The better man is going to win. I have all the respect in the world for every fighter. NOTE: There was a replay of Mercer against Evander Holyfield during this interview.

Have you started training? Are you doing anything different now?
I am training. Nothing different. I stay in shape all the time, because I never know when a fight is going to come up. I'm not changing my routine.

Should we expect to see more of the video series we've seen on the Internet?
Yeah, there's about 10 more [fights].

What has been the driving force behind your fights and influenced you to fight?
I'm fighting to get paid, take care of my family and myself. Yeah, I love to fight. I'll bang it out with anybody, but at the same time, if the purse is good, damn right, I'm there.

You've attracted a lot of attention and a lot of fans around the world. Why do you think they are drawn to you.
The reality part of it. I'm a real dude. You'll see me around, holding my kid, you'll see me at the mall. I'm not a fake dude. I'm a real life dude. I'm just like the average guy out there except that I have no fear that I'll bang it out with anybody, I don't care who that guy is. With all due respect to fighters. That's what makes me different and my fans around the world, I'm sure they love that. I'll see you and say whats up to you and we can get together and share a burger or a soda. It's real life stuff you know.

Do you have a prediction on June 23rd against Ray Mercer?
I'm gonna get in there and do my best. I'm gonna give 110%. I'm not gonna sit down, I'm ready to bang it out you know.

Anything you want to say to your fans?
Stay tuned. After the fight, catch me "in the VIP", and stay with it. Keep me in mind and keep me in your prayers.

Kimbo Vs Ray Mercer, press conference

LOS ANGELES, CA, MARCH 30 - Former Olympic Gold Medalist and Heavyweight Champion Ray Mercer sat down with touchgloves.com for an exclusive interview regarding his upcoming fight with Kimbo Slice. Mercer talks about Kimbo's weaknesses and his future as a fighter.

Mercer has previously faced Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Larry Holmes, Wladamir Klithscho and most recently current Heavyweight Champion Shannon Briggs. Mercer also has two separate Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bouts under his belt.

The fight takes place on June 23rd at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City and the New Jersey Athletic Control Board Rules for MMA will apply.

Ray, thank you for taking the time to do this interview. Your last boxing match was in August 2005 against Briggs who is now a World Champion and your last MMA fight was in March of that same year. Tell us why you are taking this fight against Kimbo Slice?
This fight gives me something to do really. It's something that I've always wanted to do. I want to be known as a crazy boxer who is a tough guy who will do almost anything. Basically, I'm taking the fight because I think I can win.

A lot of people are saying that at the age of 46 you have no business in the ring. Would you like to respond?
When they get to 46, if they don't feel like they don't need to be doing anything, then good. Ray Mercer, and there is only one Ray Mercer and he is 46, and he is getting into the Ring. I don't care about what anyone says. It's not going to make a difference because somebody says I'm too old. I'm not going to listen to them and say I'm too old. I'll let them do that when they get that age. I still feel young. I was the oldest guy on the Olympic Team. I've always been a late bloomer.

Prior to the making of this fight, had you heard of Kimbo or seen his fights?
Yes of course. I have seen two of Kimbo's fights.

What do you think of the past fights you've seen of Kimbo?
He's a street fighter. I've had some street fights of my own, where you come in hard, throwing hooks, throwing punches that don't even have a name. I feel as a professional boxer, an Olympic Gold Medalist, and former World Champion, that I can adjust to whatever I need to do. I have good people in my corner. I'm going to have everything I need to get in there and win. I took the fight because I think I can win.

What do you think are his biggest weaknesses?
He doesn't know how to box. That's what I think his biggest weakness is, he doesn't know how to box.

You predicted a 1st round KO. Do you still feel confident in that prediction?
Either he goes or I go. Thats the way I think its going to be. I'll be prepared for anything.

You've had two fights in MMA, what do you feel are the main differences between boxing and MMA?
I think MMA is much more dangerous. You have to be more alert than you have to be in boxing. You have a lot more to look out for. Its like your real gladiators out there fighting, it just is what it is.

Have you started training? What are the difference between training for boxing and MMA fighting?
I have started training. Definetely, Im training hard, but in this situation you have to make a lot of changes. I'm going through those changes right now and and I'm confident I can make them.

Game plan for the fight? Boxing or Ground?
I dont know. I might surprise everybody and go to the floor, who knows. [laughter]

Do you plan on continuing your MMA career?
Definitely.

Should we expect to see you in the boxing ring as well?
Definitely I will continue my career in both boxing and MMA.

Anything you want to tell the fans out there waiting for June 16th?
You know we've been crazy and things haven't changed. I'm going for it.
