depends what type of rappers you listen to

most genuine artists with genuine talent (not all but most), usually sound good live...and they're usually creative with their set too..a lot of them can play an instrument or two etc...they're true rapper/musicians

most gimmick rappers (not all but most) are not genuine artists but just can spit some flows and the rest is mostly artificial. so naturally they wont sound nearly as good live without the help of the studio enhancing their sound. and they're usually not creative with their sets and just go up do their shitty rap as usual w/ their shirt off and have a hype man and/or 10 guys on stage with them

hotboys are without a doubt a fuckin gimmick

yeah that rappin over a cd bullshit is bullshit. actual live instruments and switching shit up rather than just repeating the cd are a huge part of a good live show

like sage francis, who i know is a white emo rapper, but he's known for putting on really good live shows cause its not just him rapping...theres live instruments and he changes shit up all the time

The last shows I've been to have been mainly a hipster sort of crowd (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Santogold) where the worst thing that would happen is someone throws a Blackberry at you or spills a venti latte on you. lmao

Last hip hop show I went to ended up with a car in the parking lot getting shot up, 1 person dying, and 3 people being airlifted to hospitals.

I ain't trying to die just to see a rapper perform live.

Black Thought from The Roots, Zumbi from Zion-I, and Jay-Z were a few that I remember that were actually performing and just weren't screaming at the top of their lungs with 5,800 goons on stage.
