RAP DREAMS Documentary 10 year Anniversary, hosted by Rapper Mistah FAB & Film Director Kevin Epps
Oakland, CA | SBVRSL.com in partnership with REEL Black Films will present a special screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary Rap Dreams, with director Kevin Epps and rapper Mistah FAB, on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, at The New Parkway Theater, 474 24th Street, Oakland CA 94612.
The Rap Dreams documentary (originally released in 2006) chronicles the lives of three up-and-coming rappers over the course of several years, as they journey through the underground Bay Area hip-hop scene and follow their dreams of becoming rap superstars. Fast forward to 2016, and only one of the three young men featured in the film has become a successful music artist.
This film captures their passion in pursuit of their dreams, overcoming obstacles and rising above poverty---contrasting their so-called “rap dreams” with reality. The context of Rap Dreams resonates with anyone aspiring to achieve their dreams in the face of challenge, and this film is even more relevant today than it was at the time of its release.
Looking back at the industry over the last 10 years, has the “rap dreams” mentality changed? What impact has it had on the youth psyche, especially young African American men? If hip-hop is life, are we living correctly? Can hip-hop help solve our problems? Who are the new voices of rap? What are the important messages of this generation of music-makers? Does what we see depicted in film accurately reflect our surroundings? And are people motivated to move forward in artistic pursuits for reasons other than financial gratification?
There will be a post film discussion on these questions and more with film director Kevin Epps and hip-hop artist Mistah FAB, plus special guests.
Admission: $10
This event is open to the public.
