The stuff about NWA and Ice Cube are 100% true. Ren and Cube wrote all of NWA's lyrics. And Del wrote SOME songs for Cube (and many ofr Da Lench Mob) on his first solo. "Who's The Mack" is written by Del, that IS fact.
The DOC, too. I heard all of the above (except Del) wrote a lot of Eazy's stuff, too.

this is a surprisingly good thread for the open forum

and i agree with how disgusting it is for a "rapper" to not even write their own raps, let alone get famous and be praised for it

I don't agree with that at all. Most musicians have other writers, it's rap where writing is so critical cuz you're not supposed to just listen to the voice, although that's why alot of rappers are liked. (insert "it's mostly the voice" by gangstarr here) Some of the best albums have other writers contributing to their shit. Dre makes dope shit and does not write raps nor does he play instruments, but the albums he makes are classics.

I don't give a fuck who writes the shit, as long as it sounds dope

damn, how can u consider yourself a rapper when you can't write raps?
thats what goldtoes was doing. not sure if he started writing his own bars now but i remember when someone made a thread and said goldtoes is a "reciter".

I chopped it up with him the other day! He said he's a reciter now cause all his raps on the album is Ghost Written. He got some serious writers on there though. Shit slaps!

Great thread..

It makes a HUGE difference to me when a rapper doesn't write their own music. I come to music as a form of expression from the artist... Their music in my opinion is an extension of theirselves. When they don't write it, it just seems fake to me. When I listen to an album and I hear something that is amazing I think "wow this is what this person was thinking at this point and time". I feel like you have to represent yourself and your life in the music, and thats what I buy it for.

Ghost writing in my book is cheating... not just cheating yourself out of creativity, but cheating yourself out of your own self expression. I can listen to certain artist and think, "damn this person really went through this and I can relate". But if I know that someone else wrote it I think "how much did you pay this person to convey your feelings and get it right?" Its just bullshit to me that you get paid for an artform and your not even the real artist your just "spittin". Its just wack and I think the consumer deserves more from you.

I have no respect for people that don't write their own rhymes. When you write you own rhymes you can feel the emotion, thought, and emphasis that is put into a record, and I feel like I connect with that artist. Rant is over but I think and believe in someone expressing themselves.

again great thread and well worth the discussion

a rapper not writing their own rhymes is like a poet that doesn't write his own poems. imagine if pablo neruda or langston hughes had a ghostwriter.

cheat? I'm sorry but some people need help. A ceo don't run a company by himself. I seen it a million times, a battle rapper with vicious lyrics can't write a song to save his life. or foos with catchy shit can't write nothing with substance. utilizing everyone's talents makes for good product.

I see your posts and 99% of the time I agree with them, but Eminem comes to mind. Not everyone will agree with me, but this dude can battle rap and write vicious stuff with substance. But I agree that most of them cannot perform in many different ways like you say.

has anyone ever noticed that with other forms of music besides rap they credit the songwriter? Whitney Houston is credited as a Singer whereas Aretha Franklin is a Singer/Songwriter. People aren't gonna look down on Whitney Houston because she don't write her own shit, they gonna look down on her cuz she a crackhead, but the fact that other people write her hits don't mean shit. it shouldn't mean shit for hip hop. you getting top quality music, who cares who wrote it.

Listen to Eminem's EP and the infinite album before he hooked up with Dre. His shit was not all the way there as far as songs go, he had dope lyrics but only a couple actual good songs. He also didn't have as many "gimmick" songs, but he did have them (I just don't give a fuck, the song where he has green hair, etc...) but after Hi My Name Is then he opened up the floodgates and focused most of his efforts that way. I can' listen to eminem anymore, the shit is too ridiculous to me. But I'm sure even Eminem had someone else in his ear saying "nah, do it this way instead". Could've been Dre, could've been Proof, hell who knows. I'm just saying people don't gotta be solo bolo to make good music.

Snoop ghostwrote and costarred on one of the biggest albums in hip hop. you should kill your own self for that statement.

I understand what your saying Defy... Chronic 2001 is classic in my music playlist but hey thats just me. I just like to connect to artist and understand what they were going through with their music at that point in time. But yeah I understand people that don't write their shit can make good music also. To me though music is just deeper than words and beats. Its a form of expression and I feel like I can actually understand what that person has going on in their life.

I can bump people with ghostwriters no problem, but I will never actually connect with their music, simply because I know that wasn't their feelings, thoughts, and emotions that go down on that pen.
