Raiders suspend Porter for 4 games
By JOSH DUBOW
AP Sports Writer

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders suspended disgruntled wide receiver Jerry Porter for four games without pay Saturday for conduct detrimental to the team.
Porter, Oakland's leading receiver a year ago, was inactive for the first four games of the season after clashing with new coach Art Shell and making public a trade demand at the start of training camp.
"It's crazy," Porter said of his situation earlier this week. "I pretty much stay quiet and do what I'm asked. What am I supposed to do? I'm playing the cards the way they're dealt to me."
The Raiders were traveling to Denver on Saturday for Sunday night's game against the Broncos and unavailable for comment on the decision to suspend Porter.

Porter has been working with the scout team in practice, falling behind unheralded receivers Alvis Whitted and Johnnie Morant on the depth chart as Oakland opened the season 0-4. Whitted, who took Porter's spot in the starting lineup, has six catches for 70 yards, while Morant has no catches as the team's fourth receiver.
Porter has been on the sideline during the four losses to open the season, often seen joking around while the Raiders have struggled on offense without him.
Some players have questioned the decision to sit Porter while the team has struggled mightily on offense, but Shell has stuck to the decision. Shell has refused to elaborate on why Porter has been inactive.
"He's working. It's not that he's not working," Shell said earlier this week. "I've never said he hasn't worked. He's doing what he's asked to do and you can't ask for anything more than that."

Porter, in the second year of a five-year contract worth $20 million, had been hoping to be dealt before Tuesday's trade deadline.
Porter led the Raiders with 76 catches last season and had 942 yards receiving and five touchdown receptions in 2005.
Porter, a second-round pick out of West Virginia in 2000, has 239 catches for 3,215 yards and 24 touchdowns in six seasons with the Raiders. He has never reached 1,000 yards receiving in a season, missing the mark narrowly with 998 yards in 2004 and 942 last season.
Porter will be eligible to return from the suspension Nov. 12 when the Raiders host the Broncos.

He wasn't going to play anyway. Even though Porter acted like an ass, I still think you need to put the best players that give you a better chance of winning on the field. This is another retarded move by Art Shell.

He's working. It's not that he's not working," Shell said earlier this week. Shell said that but then they suspend him for conduct detrimental to the team. There just doing this so they dont have to pay him cuz he aint doing shit for them. i say cut him or trade him. Thats one thing i hate about sports is that teams fuck with there players all the time but when the players fuck with them the media blows it up like the players are selfish.

Even the players think Shell is an idiot.

Characterized by one Raiders player as "the worst practice we've had all season" under Shell, the usual 90-minute Friday session extended well past 2½ hours, several team sources said on the condition of anonymity, and much of the roster was frustrated and angry by the lack of organization.

"People wonder why we're 0-4 -- that's why," one player said of the workout. "It was a joke out there. Guys were pissed off."

Numerous players, including veterans such as Moss and defensive tackle Warren Sapp, were grumbling among themselves about the practice session, which one Raiders source described as "completely disorganized and chaotic."

At one point, sources said, Porter -- who was running with the scout team defense -- asked somewhat loudly if the practice "was going to last three hours or what?"

Shell overheard the comment, sources said, and retaliated with the suspension, which would cost Porter $235,000 of his $1 million base salary -- if it were to stick.

Fire Art Shell now! The Raiders were better last year under turner, what a sad fact. Oakland is proof that it can get worse when you think it cant.

For some reason I think this is more Al Davis' doing than Art Shell just from the comment Art Shell said. He said that Porter was working and doing what was asked of him, and that he couldn't ask much more. So that doesn't sound like Shell really wants to be benchin Porter. Alls I want to know is how does Randy Moss get away with playin half ass and making trade comments on national radio, when all Jerry Porter was arguin about was workin out at home or at the facility, it don't make no sense. If they are gonna let Randy Moss get away with sayin he ain't to worried about football right now, in the middle of the fuckin season, Porter should be playin right now. Shit I think he should be the #1 receiver right now, I think Al Davis is just some stubborn old fart that needs to sell the team before he destroys it even more, what a jack ass.

yes he did when he was given the role of #1 reciever over jerry rice & tim brown

I didn't understand the whole benching porter thing.....if its supposed to be lack of enthusiasm then the whole team should be benched. if its for seeking a trade then he should be off the bench since the deadline passed. shit just baffles me.....art shell really looks like a puppet out there....why couldn't all this have happened last year so we get reggie bush!
