GARY | A 15-year-old boy shot a 16-year-old Merrillville boy to death early Sunday morning after a rivalry sparked a fight outside a gas station in Gary, police said.
The 15-year-old boy shot three people in addition to the Merrillville boy because he was angry with "the outcome of the fight" outside a gas station at Broadway and 49th Avenue on Gary's far south side, said Cmdr. Samuel Roberts of the Gary Police Department. The 15-year-old boy was in custody Sunday night, Roberts said.
Anthony White, 16, was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound to the head at 2:49 a.m. at Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary, according to a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office.
Gary police Detective Edward Gonzalez said the "altercation" started at The Flava, a club on Broadway just south of the shooting scene. A rivalry flared between high school-age clubgoers from different sides of Gary, Gonzalez said. Roberts said he had not heard that the club was involved.
Gonzalez could not say if the shooter targeted White or if White was hit randomly.
A neighbor of the gas station said she awoke early Sunday to gunshots. She said "more than a few" shots were fired and some shots rang louder than others. The woman's husband said he found shotgun shell casings Sunday morning in the alley behind the station.
White lived in the 1800 block of West 53rd Avenue, which divides Gary and Merrillville. A woman at the home Sunday night said White's parents did not want to talk to reporters.
At The Flava, a teenage boy who answered the door said no club managers or owners were in the club. The boy said the club was hosting a church service Sunday night.
Lil dude from the neighborhood. R.I.P. I just dropped my guy Shorte off before this happened, they had the road blocked when I was heading back to the crib.
