OAKLAND — A 19-year-old West Oakland man who relocated here from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina was shot to death not far from where he lived Wednesday night.
The victim, Elray Jones Jr., was a student at San Francisco State University, police said.
Jones was shot about 9:09 p.m. near the intersection of 14th and Peralta streets. He was able to make to a nearby liquor store where he collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said today they don't know the motive for the killing, and no suspects have been arrested.
Jones came to Oakland to live with relatives after the hurricane in 2005.
The killing was Oakland's 96th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there had been 111 homicides in Oakland.
