Planada man dies in Modesto hospital after shooting Saturday

PLANADA -- A 24-year-old Planada man died Sunday in a Modesto hospital of a gunshot wound to the chest received late Saturday night in a gang-related shooting.
Sgt. Scott Dover of the Merced County Sheriff's Department said the man, who he would not identify, was shot once in the chest at 10:54 p.m. at a house at 55 Division St. in Planada. He was airlifted to Memorial Medical Center; hospital officials notified the department at 9:19 p.m. Sunday that the man had died.
The department's Major Crimes Unit and the countywide gang task force are investigating the shooting. The victim was standing in front of the home when gang slurs were exchanged and multiple gunshots rang out, Dover said.
Dover said the shooter escaped on foot and deputies don't have a good description of the suspect. Six officers from the gang task force are investigating the shooting.
