OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A Florida school board member is drawing fire from some parents for saying they should spend money on school clothes for their children instead of buying alcohol and cigarettes.

School board member Jay Wheeler's comments were made in an e-mail response to parents’ complaints that they cannot afford the new uniforms mandated by the Osceola County School District, according to MyFOXOrlando.com.

"Everyone can afford Wal-Mart and if they can’t, they need to think about turning off their cable TV or stop buying alcohol or cigarettes and spend their money on their children," he wrote.

Parent Maria Quintana says Wheeler’s e-mail is insulting.

“I have a job and sometimes it's really hard. You have to struggle," Quintana told MyFOXOrlando.com. "And to have them say something like that is really degrading."

Wheeler stands by his comments, saying people should get serious about education and put their children first.

"I thought it might be a wake-up call and I think it's something people want to say but were afraid to,” he said.
Interesting how a government employee talks to his bosses.

I dont disagree with what he said...maybe it doesnt apply to everyone because there are some people who do work hard and are still scraping by in life, but if you are the type to buy XBOX's, the latest cell phones, ipods, and have all the nice stuff in your apt but yet you complain about not being able to invest in your child's education(getting them a backpack, crayons, or the bare necessities to be successful in school) then those are the types of parents I think he is referring to...I agree..

Stop trying to bribe your kids into doing their school work or house chores and be a damn parent..what happened to "because I said so?"...Nothing wrong with rewards and incentives but a kid shouldnt expect something all the time just for doing what you TOLD them to do...they are the child...my bad for the rant...

i think the main point of his comment was to degrade those who struggle with money, and allow other, middle income parents to look down upon these parents/families.

I know far too many people who do not smoke OR drink, and work two jobs just to afford food and rent, and take night classes to further their education in the meantime. This statement is ridiculous, atleast to me, and where I live.

Growing up, i would have not been able to afford mandated school uniforms as well, because of many different reasons, but not alcohol or cigarettes, lol.

They should provide free or discounted uniforms for those who need them.
And HIM, i agree, that some people do not care about actually making sure that their children are doing their homework and are well-balanced kids, they just want them to "shutup and be good" so they reward them with all the fun little distracting toys, and freak out when they are told that the kid has 'autism' lol.

But i don't believe school uniforms are mandatory for a good education, lol, many people go to college every year that are not products of a uniformed school, and they are perfectly fine lol.

To me, his comment and what its abou tis complete bullshit and he should be thrown off of the school board.

yeah, forget kids in that equation.

you got a kid that eats, and your equations changes. It goes from Henry's to Costco after he/she's been alive either 2 to 3. Get real.
