I KNOW A COUPLE OF YOU PRODUCERS ON HERE BE SLANGIN BEATS. I WANNA GET THE LOW DOWN ON THIS. HOW DO Y'ALL GO ABOUT DOING IT? BY CONTRACT? DO YOU COPYRIGHT YOUR WORK?

I'M GOING TO START SLANGIN BEATS ON & OFFLINE, BUT I WANNA DO IT LEGIT. MEANING I WANNA STILL HAVE RIGHTS TO MY SHIT. I JUST DON'T KNOW HOW TO GO ABOUT THIS. I SOLD A FEW BEATS FLAT OUT WITH NO TIES BACK TO ME OR NOTHING. I AINT TRYING TO DO THIS ANYMORE. CAN SOMEONE LACE A YOUNGSTA THA FUCK UP!??

Man to tell u the truth, 99.9% of all the business you'll get out of the Bay will be cash business...Most artists don't belong to ASCAP or BMI and contracts are usually "handshake" ones...I always just sell my shit flat out cause let's be honest, MC D Dog from Whereverville ain't gonna go platinum on his indie release so who GIVES a rats ass about rights...I have ALL my own publishing tho but that's just because cats made SURE I became an artist member from the jump...Doesn't really do u any good tho until u start dealing with majors...Just my opinion

In my experience nobody likes to pay shit for fucking beats they complain and ask for "the hook up" and a "favor" and a "discount" - like making a quality beat is easy to do.

Some cocksucker I taught how to make beats is selling them for 700 on the reg now to record companies while I can't get 150 for mine - lol it's frustrating but I guess my beats really ain't shit - who knows, and who cares

I dunno man, to me u really can't show cats how to make a TIGHT beat...I mean u can show em the equipment an all but if they got the talent then they're born with it...I've shown quite a few cats everything I know and I'm glad to cause I need help on some equipment too!! I know ALOT of cats who have hella equipment an can use it all beautifully but their beats SUCK ASS lol na'mean?
And as far as cats askin for favors, that just means yer fuckin with the wrong people. Thats the kinda shit my "friends" used to pull...Start dealin with bigger cats and that'll all fly out the window...

Shit, If you make tight beats & wanna slang'em. Fuck it, do it under the table. YOU made the beat so it aint no thang to make another knocker feel me? Peolpe that make beats got tons of beats & really aint trippin on 'em cause theres more where that came from. So fuck it "make the money" put it towards upgrading equipment whatever! 1) It's a complete waste of time to worry about publishing and all that unless you are dealing with major record label money(which 99.9% of the people making beats out there arn't).

2) Decent beats + a seasoned mouth with get you more money than hot beats alone. Understand that theres some hustle involved here.

3) Making beats DOES NOT mean you are a "producer".

4) I don't know what your beats sound like but if they are sub-par then don't even bring the shit to the table. There's enough garbage in the streets as it is.

5) Just keep things in perspective man.

According to any major label (who judges artists based on their unit sales) E-40 & Richie Rich would be far from major.

Unless your name is Rodney Jerkins or someone else in those ranks, you're better off to take what you can get upfront and call it a day. Maybe the idea of getting a royalty check in the mail is cool but right now I think it's safe to say it's highly unlikely to happen.

If you really really really want to press the issue, take some time to go read BMI.COM.
