I was looking over the specs of the 4k and noticed this about the Phono input:

Inputs/Outputs

Rec In LINE/MIC L/R:
1/4-inch stereo phone/XLR Combo jack, balanced
1/4-inch phone: Imp. 18kohm, 24dBu max. XLR, Imp. 6kohm, 22dBu max.

Rec In PHONO L/R: RCA-pin x 2 with RIAA EQ, -24dBu max. (1kHz)

What does it mean by RIAA EQ? I'm assuming some type of protection for copyrighted material.

The RIAA equalization curve means, that you with a turnover at 500 Hz down to 50 Hz are turning the bass down with 6 dB/octave (first order filter) up till -17 dB at 50 Hz, and at a turnover of 2120 Hz, you are turning the treble and middle up with 6 dB/octave until 13.7 dB at 10 kHz. The turnover frequency is where the sound is changed ±3 dB. To compensate for the cutting equalization, it is necessary to do the opposite when you play back the records, and that’s why you use a RIAA input. The RIAA eq curve is identical with the European CCIR curve.

And since I don't sample with the 4000 I have no use for this.

I seen an rm1x for $100 on ebay, sometimes there hard to find cause they in the wrong category them ppawn shops dont always no what they got like I seen an ensoniq paris wich sold for over 4 grand Its got a 16 channel mixer that contols the software, and a box for your expansions etc,It was big at the time cause It had its own dsps and wouldnt tax your computer, also the sound quality from what i heard is top notch( alot were sayin better then pro-tools,they did side by side comparisons in nashville,I aint sure but someone said alicia keys I leep fallin song was recorded on one.......anyways
It was going for under $20 dollars, damn I was getting excited i almost bust a nut,I hurried and did some research, here is what I came up with, for someone who already had one its a steal, but for me here is whats missing the soundcard for your computer, without that its useless and finding one would be a miracle there of course is no support but I did find a users group but thius time I had to pass.
Morale to this story is them pawn shops dont always know what they got and they put it up on ebay

A pawn shop in vallejo was selling a karma for $1200. How in the hell can you sell a used karma thats scratched, dented and has a missing knob for that price? I waited for a couple of months and snatched a fresh out the box one for a PLAYER PRICE. The ONLY thing wrong with it was it had dust on the keys. No dents, no scratch marks, no missing knobs, no finger prints on the screen, original power cord, manuals etc.

You have to be careful with some of these pawnshops but some of them do have good deals.

I waS AT GUITAR CENTER AT HOLLYWOOD AND i TALKED TO A YAMAHA REP AND HE HAD SAID THAT THEY ARE FINISHED WITH THE MOTIF AND THERE WORKIN ON SOMETHIN ELSE,ME PERSONALLY, i DONT THINK I WILL EVER PART WITH MY MPC,i LIKE THE 4 MIDI OUTS AND 2 MIDI INS AND 8 OUTS.THATS JUST FOR STARTERS,i WILL EVENTUALLY GET THE 4000 UNLESS THEY COME OUT WITH SOMETHIN ELSE IN THE SERIES,bUT i HAD MY 3000 SERVICED BY BRUCE FORAT http://www.forat.com/ SO i THINK i GOT SOME MILEAGE ON IT.a FRIENDS 3000 ZIP JUST TOOK A DUMP BUT DAMN HE SAYS HE NEVER TURNS OFF HIS 3000 THATS CRAZY i TURN MY SHIT OFF IF I AINT USIN IT.....

aBOUT THE ATC,,, HERE IS ANOTHER CONSIDERATION THE SE1 USED...(SE1X IF YOU GOT THE MONEY) CAUSE AS YOU MAY KNOW THEY USE A FILTER CARTRIDGE SYSTEM, AND FOR ABOUT 100 YOU CAN GET THE ATC FILTER AND YOU CAN ALSO UPGRADE TO AN SE1X LATER ON, iF YOU SUPER PAYED THEN THE OMEGA 8 WOULD BE THE ONLY ANALOG SYNTH YOU EVER NEED.THE OMEGA IS MULTI TIMBRAL, WHILE THE ATC AND SE1X IS MONO,i HAD THE MOOG VOYAGER WICH IS ALSO MONO WICH MEANS YOU CAN ONLY SEQUENCE ONE VOICE PER SONG, BUT YOU CAN RECORD LIVE INTO YOUR RECORDING SEQUENCER...
