Just a quick question, before I buy my first MIDI.

1. Can any keyboard with a MIDI out play the piano roll in programs like Cubase for example?

2. If I used HALION as a sampler, can I play samples loaded with a keyboard as long as it has a MIDI out?

3. Can you please explain what pitch/modulation wheels exactly do?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure what this means... If you set it up right: hit a key on keyboard -> Cubase recieves midi note -> something happens (eg synth plays)

Yes. Look for one that has atleast velocity sensitivity and hopefully aftertouch

On most synths (although this is often configurable and can be changed) the pitch wheel bends the pitch of the note up or down, depending on which direction. This is useful and you hear it on bass parts a lot. The modulation wheel tells the synth how much modulation to apply to the sound. This often adjusts how much an LFO modifies the sound. The LFO is often set up to modify the pitch or the filter cutoff. It is used often on synth brass sounds.

thanks bro, i appreciate it

coz my dilema is this

the cheapest MIDI controller here in Australia is US$210. Now, i can buy just a new keyboard with a MIDI out for US$70 and with the rest of the money i can buy brand new a whole damn stereo with a full sized turntable etc etc and that connects to the computer with a USB.

So I'd rather but everything together and cut back on the pitch and modulation wheels, i just didnt know how useful they are.

a lot of programs have envelopes that let you draw out so to say a line representing the movement of the pitch bend wheel and mod wheel and just about any other function as well. it lets you make a graphical representation of those knob movements.
