its all about exposure and word of mouth. people are not gonna buy an artist who they don't know, they need familiarity with them, which is why people pay for features. "You gotta spend money to make money" and radio play always helps

I like to hear an artist speak from an original perspective. Like for example I support Kanye West becuz dude speaks from a very original perspective. He's a smart cat that dropped out of college but is good at making music and he speaks from that perspective. Then I also appreciate good lyricism, strong mic prescence, and unique delivery. That's what makes me notice an artist and support their music. How many mcs speak from a drug dealer's perspective you feel me so to me that's not an original perspective but if you're dope you'll still get my attention.

for me they gotta be unique in their own way, i dont wanna hear about rims, going dumb, grapes, and money on every track. U can only listen to those songs so many times.. and even if you DO write about those things, make it unique in your own way.. Especially if a rapper got a BORING ass voice << KEY!

Most of all tho, music is, or should be, something from the heart, so for me to get behind an artist the artist has got to put their heart in their project, I dont want no half assed generic piece of shit that your tryna sell me so you can make a quick buck typa thing.

I remember watching Pac say something along the lines of "If you make a hit song you'll have some fans temporarily, but if you reach someone's heart, then you've made a fan for life" Think about how true that is. Look at the greats, Pac, Big, Coug, Jacka etc etc you could actually feel their music, and their fans will stay fans..

I agree with that 100%


I also agree with it takes money to make money, but as far as features are concerned, I only think that applies if that particular rapper will compliment tha track. Sometimes cats albums just be lookin like roll call. If you make good music, and know who your audience is, you cant go wrong.

ummm, not tryin to blow your career up on a rap message board usually helps the cause. all the rappers who try to blow up on here i dont ever want to listen to their stuff. always see you tryin to have people listen to your songs but that just turns me off from whatever your tryin to do. its coo to keep the people updated but the tell me what you think of my song shit is kinda lame, imo. good luck tho.

exactly, a few key features can make an album worth checking out, but if you have an artist on damn near every track it shows that you can't hold down an album by yourself.....


if you're down to spend money on features, don't forget that producers can be featured artists also.

Just be yaself... And I gotta agree with hella numb I'm more inclined to check out artist by word of mouth... Rather then self promotion

I mean look at cult fallowings like awax, mob figgas, turf talk are they the best ever? No... But they gained fans 1 at a time! That starts to add up over years

This is the wrong business if you looking for instant gratification

word of mouth is a lot for me nowadays. I'd have to say that if they have an album that has about 75% good songs that I like, then I could get behind them, i hate musicians that are lazy. I like local acts, or i try to support them more. Original musicians is always a plus too. And a big thing is if they have an understandable and legit message they are trying to put out.

If they have all that then im obviously gonna support them

Word of mouth and radio play. You should press up 1,000 to 5,000 mixtapes. With a cover or no cover but at least have your name and info on the cd so they will know what there getting and give all them cds away for free. Its going to cost a rack or two but you will creat a buzz thats if they think your hot feel me
