Finally got PSUbuntu installed on the PS3. First time I've used this version of Linux. Gotta get the full screen working on configure the wireless controllers. It has hella applications available on it. Works like anyother computer environment. Desktop, FireFox webrowser, Mediaplayer, CD Burner(don't know if it's functional) Office Programs. Main thing is the emualation. I got Snes9x running on it and will install others tonight. If anyone wants help with this. I already read through some of the bullshit. So hit me if you need help. I'm reinstalling tonight with a newer version. Eventually I'll switch to YellowDog. It's the one Sony is pushing, it also takes advantage of the HDTV. But the DL is 3.5 Gigabytes compared to PSUnbuntu's 587mb.

only problem is i know SHIT about linux.

How different is it from Windows?
You don't really need to know much about linux for the things you'll be using it for on the PS3 (most likely). Really you'll have firefox, some small applications and thats pretty much it.

btw, has anyone used the PS3 to play movies/music/etc. from your PC? I have and everything works fine when playing music or viewing pictures, however I noticed that when playing movies, if I want to fast forward faster than 1.5, it will freeze up. Anyone experience that?

Also, I wonder if a version of linux is installed on the ps3 if this process would be smoother. Doberman have you tried viewing or playing movies from your pc yet?

BY movies, im assuming you mean a DVD/Blu-ray? I have only watched blu-ray on it and everything seemed boss...

I have my computer hooked to my TV, and my computer going thourgh my stero for the 5.1, so i watch my DVD's on that. I need an fiber optic whire still to connct my PS3 to my stereo so i can get the real Dolby for my Blu-rays.

Wow, that was really irrelevent to what you need...im sorry dude!

No, I mean video files on your PC (.avi, etc.). It's really easy to set up. You can browse files on your PC from the PS3 (pictures, music and video) and play them from the PS3 without having to copy them. It's convenient because sometimes I don't want to burn smaller videos to disc.

haha, no that's a nice setup, I'd like to eventually get my pc connected to my TV, just never got around to it.

How do you do that? I know of the red kawa server method, is there another one?
The way I did it is with Windows media player 11 on my PC.

Simple:
1. Click on the arrow under the Library ( from Windows media Player)
2. Click More Options
3. Library
4. Configure Sharing
5. Check Share my Media
6. You should see under share my media an icon ( Unknown device) that's your PS3
7. Click on it and allow, then click ok.

That's it. From there, on your ps3, if you look under video, pictures or music, you'll see a new folder that you can browse. That's your PC.

TVersity is probably better though, from what I've heard. Haven't tried it though.

UPDATE on PSUbuntu!

Im uninstalling for now. I installed it mainly for the emualation. Not going so well on the PS3 platform. I spent the past two days trying to get it to work. Only thing I left with was a lot more Linux knowledge.

I tried that wmp streaming thing, it was cool, some files still don't load up. I guess i'll have to convert those ones. Anyways, the cool thing about that is you can access all your music off of your computer. And pictures too.
