What all is he getting for $14k, and is he purchasing this new or used? If he has a lot of clients, the sessions are usually more than 48 tracks, and he doesn't like submixing he should purchase it. If I were your friend, and I were purchasing new, I would purchase from Sweetwater, because they don't have sales tax for customers outside of Indiana. Yes, he'll have to pay for shipping, but shipping will be cheaper than paying the sales tax on a $14k purchase here in cali.

EDIT: If he purchases from Sweetwater these items qualify for FREE shipping. No shipping fees = more money saved.

For 14k he'll be able to run the cheapest HD system, with the sync I/O, Midi I/O and 96 I/O (which does not support 192khz), but what is he going to use for his front end? If he uses PRE thats going to run him another $3k so that puts him over $15k, but this figure is based on the list prices, and does not include a computer.

Dont get it! My boy purchased a brand new HD3 setup from GC a couple years back. Paid about 20K, got it all. Honestly, we couldn't tell the difference between the stuff we had mixed that was recorded on HD and the stuff that was done on the 002. Keep in mind we used the same mic setup- Avalon-Neumann U87 for both. Maybe if you're tracking in live shit, but for hip hop stuff, definitely unnecessary. Go get the new Music Production Toolkit from DIGI, gives you plenty of tracks. And if he's just looking for eye candy to draw in customers, pick up the control 24, looks like it's more than it really is. Very simple to use.

Nothing else needs to be said, but there is a difference in the way the HD systems and the LE systems process the audio in the mix buss.

Those d8b's are cheap. You can find one used for like 2000-3500 now. Is he satisfied with the sound of the roland hard disk recorder? My first hard disk recorder was the vs 880ex, and I loved the machine. Yeah, the track count sucked, and the pre amps were not the best, but the machine did have its own sound. I miss that machine.

Is he going to dump the roland machine?

Personally, if I were not tracking and mixing large sessions, at high sample rates or in 5.1 I wouldn't get it. I would purchase a 002 or 002r, have mods made to the unit, purchase a great converter (Lynx or apogee) and snatch a couple of more pre amps. I would run the new PT with the 48 stereo tracks, and I would purchase a summing box for an "analog" type of mixdown.

If I were your friend, thats what I would do.

this would be his 3rd d8b that i know of...actually make that 4...usually he gets the apogee converters for it....he found this for $1500.the 2480 to me is real cool...but its compressed audio...I like the akai dps24 better...Not that Im well versed in anything just my opinion when listening to both...he had the dps24 ..the yamaha o2r...all in a short period.. the dps24 is pretty big and bulky though...yeah he also found a good deal on that sony c800..I think he said $2800

Why does he keep buying them? Yeah, 1800 is a good price for one, and a lot of the ones I've saw for sell were in great condition. As far as the roland goes, not all of it is compressed audio. Use the highest recording mode (MAS MODE), it the tracks will be uncompressed. The downside of that is a lower track count and not as many simultaneous recording tracks. That is a good deal for that mic. Thsoe are usually running at like 4800-6000 so if he was able to get one at that price snatch it. Do you guys use a lot of outboard gear at his spot or does he run a lot of plugins?

EDIT:

Peep this link. These are summing boxes, and he might be able to benefit from using one of these.

originally i was gonna record with him,but I just went to a studio and paid...this way it s done at my convenience.he recorded a few songs here and there...did a whole album when he had the 1880...but when he was getting all this equipment and getting rid of it he was having a conflict whether he wanted to do it cause he felt people didnt appreciate shit.....he has a long resume as far as making beats..but at this point he wants to try and set-up a small studio..mostly to mix others projects down and record if need be......But he just came into some money.he is a single parent and is nervous about blowing all the money and shit not work out....His check came saturday...he been waiting at the ddor every day for the mail man...so Im sure by tomorrow or the next day he will spend on some equipment...also in the past it was all hardware..

for tracking rappers an HD system seems like overkill, I'd only get one if I had a good steady client base to help me pay the thing off and i wanted my rig to be as professional looking as possible. I mean if you have a 002 with a good mic, pre and perhaps a top knotch A/D converter your shit will sound just about the same. I still woldn't balk at the oppritunity to get one if i had the cash though
