if youve never made a beat before i would try fruity loops, then if thats too simple or you master it quickly step up to reason. all you will need is a simple midi controller to play your notes. if you want to use outboard gear you will need to get a sequencing/audio program like cubase, sonar, etc.... because reason has no midi output. but try those two out first and see how you like it.

i have logic audio platinum 4.7 now. but it doesn't have any sound banks that i know of. so you are limited to the equivalent of of a casio keyboard. i made a few beats before and i have the understanding of what it takes to do them. i just don't have the tools. i downloaded reason last week, but it didn't work cause i got it off kazaa. isn't that shit like 500 bucks? i have a keyboard with the midi cables hooked up too just so yall know

1) Get any version of Cubase that supports VSTI's (VST Instruments).

2) Download the zillions of VSTI's there are out there.

and/or

3) Create your own VSTI's using custom samples with software like Max/MSP.

and/or

4) Build your own soundfonts using software like AWave by FMJ Soft.

If you know how Logic Audio works and already have a midi controller, you're set. Should be a piece of cake.

I use Cubase 5.1,
along with a lot of vst instruments:
Model-E (a mini moog clone)
Pro-53 (a prophet 5 clone)
Lounge Lizard (an electronic piano sim, does rhodes and much more)
FM-7 (a dx7 clone)
Halion (sampler)
Battery (drum sampler)

Those are the ones I use regularly on almost every track. Sometimes you have to use others to get a different sound.
