I know most of ya'll only get down on the production side....But I was wondering.....

Have you ever got the chance to do your thang on the mic?
or do you ever plan to?

To me there is nothing more impressive than a producer who can spit.....
it's a deadly combination that's very rare these days.....

in the 90's u got cats comin out like .......
Warren G, JT the Bigga Figga, Daz, Legendary Traxter, Quik, Happy Perez, Dre, Sean T...etc

What Happened????

I started out rapping then got into composing later on. I would say more and more up and coming rappers are dipping their hands into as many aspects of the business as possible, at least the talented ones. From composing their own beats to producing their own albums. But if everyone did everything themselves then there would be no need or demand for say a real official "Producer". So sticking to what your best at and most passionate about is probably the best choice, for personal and career-oriented reasons.

Also I believe that rapping is something anyone can do with ease, learn to do, learn to excel at and grow with. It's so abundant, everybody is a rapper these days. Not everyone can produce records, and to those that do produce records in the Independent game, only a small percentage of them are successful so. Whatever is meant to be is meant to be.

I don't think anyone can just learn how to rap. I mean yeah you can make words rhyme and what not, but teh shit isn't that easy. If it were you would have a gazillion platinum artists and no one would flop.

And yeah I spit and compose, but I put my album on hold (a metal/rap album) because I got tied up in other business ventures that were better for me at the time, but when I finish working on my folks project I may go back, tighten some things up and put it out.

i rap and produce too but its hard for me to rap on my own beats because i know where every sound is and the beats get boring after hearin it so much so i lose focus and tired of hearin it.i like to rap over other producers beats cause its fresh to my ears and when its a tight ass beat i can think of a lot more concepts to come up with.

If I'm going to write a song to the composition personally I do it right away once I lay down the main melody, the bass, and the drums, I write it when the beat is still fresh in my mind and not played out, like it would be say, after mixing it and tweaking it.

I tell you what. Next time you are in the studio, bring a free stylist in, sit them down and see how long it takes them to learn how to write and spit a song.

Agreed^^^^^^
When I'm composing some shit...especially n the beginning stages...
I like to playa round with differnet types of flows that would go nice with the track.. and sometimes I get some half decent stuff...

^word!

id been writing poetry since i was 9...
so around the time i was 17-18 my pen was vicious,
but my freestyle was mostly ass!
we started having cyphers all the time,
everyday for hours (thats how my freestyle CDs came about)
after about 2-3 years of doing the that,
freestyle edge of the blade was just as sharp as the written side,
they both take dedication and a love for this music shit to succeed.......

If you can do both you can come out with some crazy shit, since you're the one envisioning the track and everything to begin with.

I started out rapping, but later didn't have to ambition to do it anymore. I then got into producing, not making beats (composing), but producing. Engineering and producing songs/projects is my passion, but I am also dabbling in composing as well.

i rap and make beats. Once i make a beat i got a certain sound, flow, concept for the beat,etc...in my head and a direction i want to go with it. There's times when i'm more into making beats rather than flowin, but when i can't come up with any beats that's when i start writing. Tha only reason i started making beats was because nobody around here did it. There was nobody to get beats from, and everybody else was just usin internet shit. Now it's a passion that grows continuisly
