Pay attention to CAP letters.
I'm not in front of PT right now but follow me.
Make sure the track you want to automate is set to WRITE or TOUCH. Go to the plugin you want to automate and select AUTO. You'll now see a list of plugins used as inserts for the track. Select the plugin you want to automate and select the plugins parameters by clicking ADD.
Now go back to the plugin you want to automate. All the parts you selected will be RED. Play the track back and create/record your automation by altering whatever parameters you chose. After you have done this change the tracks automation setting to READ. Play it back and listen. Did it record your automation? If you followed my steps yes.
As I said before I'm not in front of pro tools and I don't know all of the parameters of whatever effect you are using. A simple work around (since I'm not looking at anything right now) is to BYPASS THE MASTER in automation.
