The unified rules have been the talk of the town. Heated debates within the MMA community have been a daily occurrence. UFC Vice President of Regulatory Affairs Marc Ratner recently confirmed that future events after Pride 34 will utilize the unified rules.


- Foot stomps, soccer kicks, and knees to the head of a downed opponent will no longer be allowed.

- Round times will change to 3 x 5-minute rounds and 5 x 5-minute rounds for championship fights (no more 10-minute first rounds).

- The use of colored penalty cards will be discontinued.

- Elbows will be allowed.

- Shoes, gis, and pants will not be allowed (sorry Aoki).







They already fuck shit up. Hella weak IMO........

I don't mind the other shit too much but losing knees to the head of a downed opponent sucks. I wouldn't even mind stomps and soccer kicks going if they would at least keep the knees.


edit: and the 10 minute first round going does kind of suck too.

The change of the rules sucks especially for fighters who are well known or actually use stomps and kicks..example SHOGUN man o man oh well if u want Pride vs UFC we will get it but too bad about the rules..

They can always bring back these rules. Why theyre doing this is so they can get PRIDE back on TV and make it look "not-so-barbaric". The fortelli brothers pretty much own MMA now.
The whole thing about the gis is kind of a brainscratcher though.

You can choke the shit outta someone with the GI, ala royce gracie & hideiko yoshida.

Like above mentioned they could always bring it back. Now I feel as tho changing all of pride rules does suck. But I do remember times when Mirko would boot someones skull into the first row, one fight i could remember was crocop vs waterman. Them kicks were so loud I crinched just of the thought. Any thread you see on the net where its a couple of kids are fighting and skinny dude is getting his head kicked in cause he is down on the ground, your more likely than not get a lot of voiced opinions saying thats bitch shit kicking a person on the ground. Kicks to the body i think is okay when a ground fighter is on his back and he doesnt want to get back up.
I like knees to the body, they should keep that rule in effect. When a fighter is on top on half guard and no action is taking place knees makes the strikes valid thus action is being taken place.

Eventually it'll work out. Elbows are gonna make a lot of fights bloodier and stopped quicker. I cant wait to see Ricardo Arona or a Shogun hell even Fedor drop some fight ending elbows....

naw folks we need these rules if mma is going to be look at as a legit sport I mean I will miss the foot stomps but man that shit look awful when someone who watching mmma for the first time

This is very sad for true pride fans. Chute Box have deadly footstomps and its a shame they'll have to give them up.


as for kicking a downed opponent being bitch shit, hell no show me in the rules of street fighting where it says its not allowed,you wont be able to. why? cause when street fighting there are no rules. You just fuck him/her up till you think they had enough. IMO

none the less we'll have to see how this all plays out.

THIS WAS CLOSEST TO REALITY IN ALL COMBAT SPORTS, NOW IT'S JUST LIKE KICKBOXING WITH SHOOTS...
FUCK THAT BRING BACK THE VALE TUDO RULES.
TO ME I THINK THEY DID THIS SHIT TO NEUTRALIZE PRIDES NAME FIGHTERS LIKE SHOGUN AND WANDY...OR MAYBE NOT
BUT EITHER WAY THATS SOME BAD NEWS.
RIP MMA AS WE KNEW IT.

Im sure the Japanese Market is gonna take the rules with open arms. After all its the japanese fighters that are more likely the ones to get their heads caved in. If true Pride fans in the US wouldve bought their ppv's they would still be owned by sakikabara. They been running Pride fights on FSN for well over a year and they ppv buys werent as high buys like ufc ppv having better fights and competition. Most Pride fans just wait til it gets on youtube then watch it. I say blame pride fans for making it the sale happen....
