Fight #1 - Yosuke Nishijima vs Cyborg
I just got home in time to see Cyborg choke out Yosuke. Yosuke didn’t tap either and was put completely to sleep.
Winner: Cyborg by choke in rd 1
Fight #2 - Crocop vs Silva
They both came out swinging and one of Crocop’s blows caused Wanderlei’s right eye to immediately swell. Moments later Crocop connected with a big punch that sent Wand down, he followed him into his guard and began some effective ground and pound. As Wand’s head crept outside the ropes the ref stopped it to let the Doc examine his eye.
After several minutes the Doc deemed him ok to continue and they restarted in the center of the ring. Three minutes of little action passed before the ref stood them up, gave Wand a yellow card and started them again on their feet.
Again both guys came out swinging hard and Wand’s face looked terribly busted up. Crocop then threw a hard left kick to Wand’s midsection. Moments later he threw another one high and it KO’d Wand out cleanly. The KO kick was perfectly set up with the previous mid-section kick. A very intelligent sequence from Crocop.
Winner: Mirko Crocop by KO (left kick to head)
Fight #3 Josh Barnett vs Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira
These guys blew a lot of energy. Their fight had a little of everything including standup sub attempts, sub defense, leg lock attempts and ankle locks.
In the opening round the first 3 minutes or so was all standup that Nog got the better of, then the next couple of minutes Josh took it to the ground in top position and got the better of Nog, then Nog got out and during the transition Barnett tried a guillotine. Nog got him down and dominated until around the two minute mark when both fighters attempted ankle locks. The both gave up their positions at about the same time but Nog was quicker and jumped into Josh’s guard. The last 30 seconds or so he went for an armbar and I swear he was about to get it but amazingly Josh showed some serious strength and fought it off.
This round would easily go to Nog but Pride scores their fight differently. The ending of the fight has much more value to a fighter then the beginning.
The second round was more of the same only it was more equal. Both guys had their moments and in the last minute Barnett had Nog on the defensive. He was in top position and went for a kneebar in the closing seconds. Two judges gave the fight to Barnett while one gave it to Nog.
Winner: Josh Barnett by split decision
Fight #4 Sergey Kharitonov vs Aleksander Emelianenko
The first three minutes saw the fighters on their feet. kharitonov showed a good beard as he ate some pretty clean shots from Aleks who threw fast and powerful punches. Sergey threw some nice inside low kicks to Aleks’ left leg but this early standup was won by Alek’s.
Seven minutes in Sergey connected with a beautiful short right hand that dropped Alek’s. He jumped on top of him and began to ground and pound. At first he landed well but once Alek’s head cleared he began to stalemate Sergey. After two minutes of this the ref stood them up for non-action.
Sergey was much more confident and he came began to force the fight. Finally Alek’s caught him with a series of shots that clearly wobbled Kharitonov. As the fell to the ground Alek’s remained in top position at whaled away at the side of Sergey’s head. Sergey attempted to roll Aleks over him but instead ended up with his face close to Alek’s knee. Alek’s wasted no time and threw one that landed flush on Sergey. The ref immiedately jumped in and although Sergey protested it was a good stoppage.
Winner: Aleksander Emelianenko by TKO in rd 1
Fight #5 Lee Tae-Hyun vs Ricardo Morais
These guys blew all their energy in the opening moments. Both went for wild haymakers that looked extremely unrefined. Finally the fight went to ground at around the seven minute mark and due mainly to exhaustion the pace slowed to a crawl. The ref stood them up at around the 5 minute mark and issued yellow cards to both fighters. The standup from here on out was extremely strange. Neither guy had any energy to throw power punches. In fact there was a good possibility that one guy would drop simply from exhaustion. At one point Hyun laid his head against the corner buckle appearing to simply rest. Although Morais was right next to him he didn’t throw punches because he was too tired. Instead the ref just yelled “Give up?” to Hyun until he lifted his head.
A few moments later the ref broke the fighters up to have the doc look at Hyun’s face. Moments later the fight was stopped.
Winner: Ricardo Morais via Doctor Stoppage in rd 1
Fight #6 Kazahiro Nakamura vs Yoshihiro Nakao
Most of this fight took place standing. It was a failry slow paced fight, both guys would load up with a big shot and then back off and reset. The ref didn’t like it and issued yellow cards to both fighters. In the end it was a combination of a bad style matchup and the fighters not letting their hands go enough.
Winner: Kazahiro Nakamura by unanimous decision
Fight #7 Shogun Rua vs Cyrille Diabate
After tasting a punch and a knee from his long-limbed splindly opponent Rua immediately took the fight to the ground and assumed side mount. He stayed busy there mostly by trying to improve his position rather than by striking. Diabate got back to his feet twice but Rua just took him down again. Finally with less than five minutes left in the opening round Rua landed a series of brutal soccer kicks and foot stomps that knocked Diabate out.
Winner: Shogun Rua by TKO in rd 1
Fight #8 Ricardo Arona vs Alistair Overeem
The standup portion of this fight was dictated by Overeem once he landed a hard knee to Arona’s face. Although Arona was fighting cautiously he still managed to throw some low kicks. Eventually he landed one to Overeem’s left knee that eventually ended the fight for him but to Allistair’s credit he fought through the pain for a few minutes.
Once that kick landed Allistair tried to put his weight on it but the pain caused him to fall to the ground. Arona polunced on him and controlled the fight until the end. He eventually back-mounted Overeem and began working for a rear naked by throwing winging shots to the sides of his head. Long before the choke was in though Allistair tapped apparently because of the pain in his knee.
Winner: Ricardo Arona by tapout in rd 1
Fight #9 Josh Barnett vs Mirko Crocop
Mirko Crocop kicked Josh Barnett’s ass plain and simple. His standup was nearly flawless as he threw incredibly fast and powerful combinations mixed in with some left kicks to Barnett’s body. To Josh’s credit he did absorb some tremendous shots during the standup. What sent him down was a nasty left hook to the body from Crocop and from there a positively ferocious Mirko unleashed some relentless ground and pound. The ending came after Josh yelled out “Ahh shit” just as he was covering his right eye and tapping with his left. It appeared he got poked in the eye although I didn’t see exactly what it was in the replays.
IN Barnett’s post-fight interview he was very gracious and said “tonight was Mirko’s night”. He did not mention anything about an eye poke.
Winner: Mirko Crocop by tapout in rd 1
