This is a new game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda. At first glance it looked like your typical first person shooter with PRG elements in space - oooh you're in a space station set in the future and you have to kill/survive an alien attack? Wow so unique! But as more information has came out, it actually sounds pretty cool:

That's when Prey, the upcoming retelling of the 2006 game of the same name, twists the notion of what you know. You wake up in your bedroom again, just like before, as if the first 30 minutes of the game were a bad dream. But once you start exploring, you discover you're not in an apartment. You're in the middle of a giant sound stage simulating parts of your life, Truman Show-style. Once escaping the sound stage, you learn you're not in a futuristic version of San Francisco but instead on a space station that seems to be largely deserted. But one part of that earlier vision is true: The station is overrun with aliens. You soon discover that it’s all a set, designed to keep your character in a Groundhog Day/Truman Show-like loop while they run different Neuromod experiments on you day after day, wiping your brain and resetting the mods after each day.​

Those aliens, too, are deceivers. They're not too imposing one-on-one; a few smacks with the wrench you carry is enough to dispatch them. But they're masters of surprise, because they can take on the form of everyday objects scattered around the space station, lying in wait for the right time to strike. At one point during the preview, I picked up a seemingly innocuous item and stored it in my inventory, only to have it start to strangle me. It was my first time playing through the game, and I didn't know what to do, so it killed me quickly. After that, I was a lot more careful about what items I picked up.​

That's pretty cool. Not sure if I'll buy this right away, but sounds intriguing enough to at least check out at some point.

I wrote a long detailed reply but shit crashed on me.

Basically;

-Prey 2 was made by a different company and different writers than the original Prey and suffered a lot of development issues.

-This upcoming Prey is not a sequel, nor a remake of the original - it's a reboot of the IP, using concepts from the original and none from Prey 2 (they will act like Prey 2 never happened).

-Worthy of note is that co-founder of Obsidian Chris Avellone, who was one of the lead writers/developers of Fallout New Vegas and Fallout 2, is the main writer of the upcoming Prey. He's a really good writer so lots of people are expecting Prey to have a great story

Tried the demo out, wasn't impressed. I think I'm just tired of the Bethesda formula for fps/action games by this point.

Could be. What about the mimics though? Do you come across a lot in the demo? Seems like a cool concept that anything could be a mimic.

Early reviews are good but gotta wait a couple days since the embargo just ended.

Their AI wasn't that good either. It's more like a random encounter in an rpg than like a sneak attack by another player in pvp.

I see. Some of the brief videos I watched looked pretty cool, and seemed they could take the form of anything and sometimes really cool, unexpected ways. The creatures reminded me a bit of face crabs in Half-Life. But I guess that could get old after awhile. Seemed like a combination of Bioshock and Deadspace with a little bit of Alien: Isolation. But maybe that's the problem, like you said, having aspects and a feel of other games could make it also feel generic.

The coolest part seems like when you get the ability to transform into objects too. Yeah it's def a lil too similar it's reference material for me, it seems like a competent game its just not doing enough to separate itself imo. I heard the stealth AI is garbage too.

I played the demo and that future San Francisco was awesome but I think I played the best part so not for me. Back to ff7 lol. Man I wish i a game like the witcher or horizon came out every few months
