WASHINGTON, D. C., Oct. 2 - Ralph Nader today called on President Bush to let the American public know whether he supports the demands of the Texas Republican Party platform calling for the abolition of the income tax, a wipe out of the social security system, the repeal of the minimum wage, and the cancellation of the War Powers Act.
Nader asked the President to respond to the Republican platform's declaration that the "greatest threat to our individual liberties is overreaching government controls established under the guise of preventing terrorism."
"As you accelerate your campaign for re-election, sooner or later you will be asked whether you associate or disassociate yourself from your own state party platform," Nader told the President.
Nader noted that Texas Republican Party expects support for its platform from Republican office holders and candidates, pointing out that the Party's Executive Campaign Committee has been directed "to strongly consider candidates' support of the platform" when granting financial or other support.
"The Texas Republican Party, with which you have been associated throughout your political career, makes it clear that it intends to enforce its platform stands," Nader told the President. "The American public needs to know whether you agree or disagree with these positions."
