this happened yesterday, the day after the first story....coincidense?or maybe ppl getting fed up wit cops shooting minorities....LA police arrest two suspected of shooting at officer
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Police were investigating whether the drivers of two vehicles planned to shoot an officer who was conducting a traffic stop on the Harbor Freeway early Wednesday when he was fired on. He was not hurt.
The incident marked the fourth unprovoked shooting at a police officer in Los Angeles this year, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.
The officer, whose name was not released, was patrolling South Los Angeles at about 2 a.m. when a man driving a Honda Accord flashed gang signs at him and drove off, said police Lt. Paul Vernon. The officer requested backup help from another patrol car and followed the driver, who went onto the 110 Freeway and stopped.
While the officer waited for backup, a Toyota Camry pulled up and someone inside fired several shots, shattering a rear window in the officer's patrol car. A pursuit ensued, and before it ended on a surface street someone had thrown a gun out of the car, Vernon said.
Ramon Pereyda and Victor Ledezma, both in their 20s, were arrested and booked for investigation of attempted murder on a police officer. The weapon tossed from the car was recovered.
The driver in the Accord drove off and remained at large late Wednesday, Lee said.
"Part of our investigation will be to determine if the occupants of both cars knew each other or were working in concert," Vernon said.
"This is a gang-related crime," he added.
Lee said he did not know whether the attack was related to the three other unprovoked shootings earlier this year.
Police said the first two of those shootings, on Jan. 1 and Jan. 9, were gang-related. A gang connection to the third shooting, on Jan. 17, has not been established.
