Phoenix Theater cancels rap concerts

By PAUL PAYNE
THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

Petaluma’s Phoenix Theater is canceling gangster-style rap concerts following a fight last month in which a teenager was arrested outside with a loaded gun, officials said Tuesday.

Manager Tom Gaffey said the ban on music often seen as promoting violence is a safety measure until the nonprofit teen center can figure out what types of rap it can allow.

Of concern is a popular style of music known as hyphy, which features pounding rhythms and gritty lyrics and was on the bill at the Phoenix the night of the incident.

Theater officials have been meeting with police about the crowds hyphy draws.

“We need to really think about whether hyphy and hip hop can exist,” Gaffey said. “We have too many kids down here to take that kind of a risk.”

Rap music lovers standing outside the Phoenix Tuesday said the ban was unfair because it lumps all rap music into one category.

Some said the theater’s response to the Jan. 26 incident was excessive.

“That sucks,” said Mike Snow, an 18-year-old junior college student. “It’s lame that all rap shows are canceled for a couple of idiots.”

Wow...was wondering how long until Tom did that. I've been to plenty of punk shows there where people get sliced or jumped, wonder when he's gonna stop those shows as well...
I guess there's something a lot more threatening about a passive aggressive teenager with a gun when compared to an aggressive punk enthusiest with a blade of some sort. :ermm:

Tom's been a double-talker as long as I can remember (which is ATLEAST 15 years). He said "no more rap" after The Link Crew lit 151 on fire on the stage in like 1996 lol...Then it was "ok just the backpack groups". Then he saw the money that could be brought in with more mainstream acts and changed up again. Simple as that. He'll talk ALOT of shit about rap music but the money for him is too good to pass up. What's funny is that there have been how many of these shows and yet they're blaming it on one incident? Dude is just weird and obviously folded to the PPD.

And before anyone steps in defense, I've known dude and done shows at the Phoenix since the Pajama Jam concert with 51.50 in 1992 lol....So I ain't gonna hear it
