PASADENA (AP) ― Pasadena's police chief now says it's uncertain whether a man armed with a gun actually fired at officers before they killed him.

Leroy Barnes was killed Thursday afternoon after police stopped his car because it was being driven on the wrong side of the street.

Police initially said the 38-year-old Barnes got out of the car and shot at them before officers killed him.

But Police Chief Bernard Melekian said Friday that Barnes was in the back seat and he can't confirm whether Barnes ever used the handgun he was carrying.

Some witnesses said they only heard police shots fired.

A woman in the car wasn't hurt.

The shooting remains under investigation
