This thread is regarding the West Memphis Three, the incident at Robin Hood Hills, and the ensuing documentaries. If you have some spare time, read through this thread, and watch/read some of the available videos and news articles.
Did anyone watch either of the Paradise Lost documentaries made in the mid-to late 1990's; Paradise Lost: The Child Murders at Robin Hood Hills and/or Paradise Lost 2: Revelations? I suggested both of them in the documentaries thread a while back and didn't get much of a response so I'm reluctant to believe any of you will remember who Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, Jr., or Jason Baldwin are. However, with the NEWS that was released yesterday I thought now was as good of a time as any to post about them.
Let me start by saying, the level of interest in these documentaries and the West Memphis Three has almost everything to do with the story of what happened at Robin Hood Hills. That is to say, the manner in which the documentaries were put together leaves something to be desired, but it does not take away from the actual message which it conveys. With that being said, the story, the message, is absolutely astounding. And as such, they are two of my favorite films.
There are two documentaries, with a third one on the way:
"Three men, subsequently referred to as the West Memphis Three, were tried and convicted of the murders of three boys in West Memphis, Arkansas on May 5, 1993. During the trial, the prosecution put forth the idea that the only purported motive in the case was that the slayings were part of a Satanic ritual. Damien Echols was sentenced to death, Jessie Misskelley, Jr. was sentenced to life imprisonment plus two 20-year sentences, and Jason Baldwin was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In July 2007, new forensic evidence was presented in the case, including evidence that none of the DNA collected at the crime scene matched the defendants, but did match Terry Hobbs, the stepfather of one of the victims, as well as a friend of Hobbs' whom he had been with on the day of the murders. The status report jointly issued by the State and the Defense team on July 17, 2007 states, "Although most of the genetic material recovered from the scene was attributable to the victims of the offenses, some of it cannot be attributed to either the victims or the defendants." On October 29, 2007, the defense filed a Second Amended Writ of Habeas Corpus, outlining the new evidence."
Here is the first part of the second documentary. Even though the first was given much better reviews, watching the second will cover some of the main points in the first as well as show how the case and the lives of the WM3 has evolved over the years.
One of the most intriguing things is that John Byers, the oakie looking guy that can be seen throughout both of the films (seen above), and father of one of the victims, has since become an advocate for the release of the West Memphis Three. Not only that, but 2 of the victims families have followed suit. Whats more, celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Winona Ryder, Ozzy Osbourne, Metallica, (and many more) had also become WM3 advocates.

I understand that this thread has much to do with matters outside of movies & television, but with consideration to the fact that most of what any of us know about the WM3 revolves around the afore mentioned documentaries, I would hope that this thread will not be moved.
I used to visit the website that was made for the WM3 regularly to read up on their tribulations and fight for freedom. But yesterday 8/19/11 was a day of redemption.
