GEORGETOWN, Ky. (AP) -- Carson Palmer went 4-for-9 for 57 yards and a touchdown pass in Cincinnati's scrimmage on Friday night, his first action under game conditions since tearing up his knee in the playoffs.
An estimated crowd of 9,400 attended the workout and Palmer was the main attraction.
Palmer needed reconstructive surgery on his left knee after a hit from Pittsburgh defensive end Kimo von Oelhoffen on Jan. 8 tore his anterior cruciate ligament and the medial collateral ligament.
On Friday night, Palmer threw incomplete on his first four pass attempts but connected on four of his next five throws in his second go-around of the evening.
"I want to go out there and complete 100 percent of my passes and be perfect but I'm realistic also and realize that you're not going to complete every ball," Palmer said. "Every chance I step onto the field I feel it's a step forward and I need to take a step forward. So far this camp I feel like I've done that."
Palmer showed the mobility to move around the pocket and outside of it when necessary. His longest completion was 37 yards to wide receiver Chris Henry. Palmer's touchdown pass was a 6-yard throw to Tab Perry.
The Bengals open the regular season at Kansas City on Sept. 10, which will be eight months since Palmer's knee surgery.
"I think it's obvious that there is still rust on him," offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said. "It's to be expected. It's the first time for him in a situation like this."
The Bengals will hold a mock game at 1 p.m. Saturday, but Palmer is not going to participate. Anthony Wright and Doug Johnson will take all of the snaps.
"I don't know what the numbers would tell you in this thing," coach Marvin Lewis said. "I think Carson is always overly hard on himself. I think harder than anybody I've ever been around that plays that position."
