Rangers' Palmeiro Joins
Elite Club With 500th Homer
Texas Outslugs Cleveland 17-10

By STEPHEN HAWKINS
.c The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas (May 11) -- Texas slugger Rafael Palmeiro hit his 500th career homer in his last chance to get it at home.

Palmeiro hit a three-run homer in the seventh off Cleveland right-hander David Elder to become the second player to reach the milestone this season as the Rangers beat the Indians 17-10 Sunday.

Palmeiro became just the 19th player ever to join the 500-homer club, following Sammy Sosa of the Chicago Cubs, who did it April 4.

With the crowd standing in anticipation, knowing Palmeiro wasn't likely to get another at-bat, the left-hander hit a full-count fastball 370 feet over the right field fence. The Rangers play their next six games on the road.

Fireworks exploded in the daylight sky and the crowd broke out into a loud and extended ovation. Like all of his previous homers, there was no posing and no strutting after the ball left the bat. Palmeiro dropped his bat and trotted around the bases.

His teammates mobbed him at the plate, and as the crowd chanted "Raffy!'' he came out of the dugout for a curtain call.

Palmeiro return to the field to star the seventh inning, but only so that the crowd of 23,407 would have another chance to cheer the first baseman. Before the inning started, Herbert Perry replaced Palmeiro.

This marked the third time two players have hit the historic homer in the same season. Mickey Mantle and Eddie Mathews did it in 1967, and Harmon Killebrew and Frank Robinson in 1971.

Los Angeles' Fred McGriff could make it three with 17 more homers this season.

Among those at the game were Palmeiro's mother, Maria, and his brother Rick, who had arrived from Miami on Wednesday.

One of the most underated players in baseball history.Viagra Power

Mike Schmidt
A right handed power hitter, who played 3rd base in the National League, and is a Philly legend

OOOOOOOOO K!!!LMAO

Rafeal Palmeiro
A left handed spray hitter, who plays 1st base in the American League, and has played for a few teams

Maybe you will remember him as Schmidt,I think most would remember him as a Willie McCovey,or a powerful Keith Hernandez.

LOL

They are both going to go down as under-rated power hitters. They will both be in the hall of fame, but won't be talked about to much. You read to much in to what I said, and your trying to hard to prove me wrong in anything you can, I must have put you through serious torment or some shit. Maybe you will remember him as "A left handed spray hitter, who plays 1st base in the American League, and has played for a few teams" but most of us will remember a very under-rated solid hitting hall of fame player. This obviously isn't your good subject.

"from the net>In 1999, 2 million people around the world voted to name the best baseball players of the 20th century. Preceding the All-Star Game in Fenway Park in July 1999, the All-Century Team took center stage in a rousing ceremony. Among the legends stood Bob Gibson, Mike Schmidt, Willie Mays, Brooks Robinson<net.."There you go moron,2 million people decided he should make the all century team..lol,that's reality numnutz, thats from people who know baseball.Your just mad because I laughed at your comparison of 2 totally different players, you are a buffoon when it comes to baseball, obviously.

You may have invented fantasy baseball, cuz you obviously have no clue about Mike Schmidt..lol

"Even at that you had no comment on it other then an under-rated viagra hitter?"

What do I need to comment on?I'm giving guys like you,who have no sports knowledge,a bit of baseball news,HAHA

Your trying to hard dude, just because I clowned your ass for not knowing baseball you try to tell me the same shit.I must of missed you clowning me,but my 20+ years of actually playing the game, and traveling around the U.S. because of my baseball abilities is enough credibility. You are a couch quarterback,we know this!:)

You stick to the Faker threads homie, and let the real athletes who have actually been on a playing surface comment on sports.Fresno St. pep rallies don't count nerd. Not only do I kill you in hoop and foot, but your Mike Schmidt assesment might even be more embarresing than the 3 point ordeal. You are a buffoon,or just to young to remember Schmidt.Sincerely,The Guru of Guru's.

Not that it matters that I played baseball for 5 years, since when do you have to play the sport in order to know about it? Is this some new thing you made up or is playing baseball the only thing you have to tell people in life? I never played any serious baseball (like college) but believe me, I know enough.

Huh? Are you talking about actually playing the game? I would rather not act a kid and tell people whom I have never seen I am better then them at anything, but this kind of reminds me of those skinny nerdy kids who roam the internet acting tough telling everyone he can beat there ass because he's crazy... you get the picture. Don't make claims like that over the internet, it actually gives people the impression you would more then likely not succeed in them.

Only embarassment from that might be on your part for getting caught up in that lie.

Thats a great article and I too would have voted for him, but it doesnt change the fact that he is not talked about very much at all. Everytime you watch a game the comentators are talking about the greats', never mention him, the same goes for sports shows all over. That arguement would be good for a person saying Schmidt was not a good player. They are both solid hitters, sure as a player on the field they are different, but generally speaking as a player when all finished, they are memories. Your only arguement is that he indeed gets talked about on every occasion when speaking of the greats, I just don't hear it. Like I said to begin with, you read to deep into my comment.

My 2 cents. Maybe being a little older I can add something. Schmidt was a monster and everyone talked about him when he played. 3 time MVP,4HR in a game,12 time All Star,10 Gold Gloves,
Player of the Decade,8 time HR champ,4 time RBI champ, misses 30/30 by one stolen base. The best 3rd basemen of all time. Plus he was my favorite growing up.

Palmeiro is tremendously underrated, so much so thats its tough to even think of a player that was/is as underrated as he. Maybe Orlando Cepeda, thats just off the top of my head.
