1992-1997 were the golden years. 1998 was OK. 1999 was one of the best indie years for the Bay. 2000 was great with records from Celly Cel, JT The Bigga Figga, Killa Tay, Spice 1, etc. 2001 was good. 2002 was our worst year ever and albums were few and far between.

TOTAL: Over 300K for 2002
San Quinn-The Mighty Quinn. That it only sold 7700 albums. This was definitely a classic album. The beats werent typical but the flows were on point and Quinn was flowing on a different tip.

Mac Mall- Mackin Speaks Louder than Words- This one of my favorite CDs from last year. Yet it only sold 8k, while Immaculate sold over 30k. The only reason I could come up with was poor promotion and the cover scheme...Someone browsin this album at the store might mistake it for a bootleg/collection style format or something like that because all of Mall's other CDs have cover schemes with pictures.

RBL Posse-Hostile Takeover- This album sold 23,000 units. Thats crazy! I remember hearing it and I wasnt really impressed by it. But it outsold the Mighty Quinn 3 FOLD! I guess the RBL name still carries some weight!

I think its a shame that Jay Tee's solo only sold half of what Beesh's solo sold when in my opinion Jay Tee's release was one of the best of 2001.

Beesh being in Texas is obviously what made that difference, not the quality of the project itself.

waht about e-40 grit and grind?
It was on a major.

Nothing surprises me anymore. Thats the way the game goes. But for everyone who says the Bay is dead, our #'s are still higher than any other indie market out there except Houston.

Support Bay Area Rap.

What surprised me the most and has me "WORRIED" is that the sales of Luni Coleone and Mac Dre are falling according to SoundScan and we the Bay Area and Sacramento as a whole need their sales to stay secure.

All the Brotha Lynch album sales shocked me.. I didn't know people still feel him. I know I don't, after Season of Da Siccness. And I thought West Coast Mafia went ghetto platinum? Messy shoulda sold much much more.. that's a real classic there, solo classic.

HELL NAW HOSTILE TAKEOVER SHOULD HAVE SOLD OVER 100,000 COPIES
Well, I don't know about the sales, but I thought HOSTILE TAKEOVER was dope, too. It wasn't a classic, but there were some knocks.

I think that it might have been accepted more if Black C had maybe titled it "The RBL Posse's Black C Presents...Right Way's Hostile Takeover." The reason being (1) that RBL isn't RBL without Mr. Cee, and (2) because it was more a sampler of Black C., Hitman (R.I.P.) and other Right Way artists. I dug "You Know The Rulez", "Where Am I Going To?", "The Vapors", "Stay Pump!", "Frisco, Frisco", "Smooth Sailin'", "Lay 'Em Down", "RBL 2001" and "Lost A Homie" the most. But again, if you think of HOSTILE TAKEOVER as a Right Way Comp instead of as an RBL release per se, it sounds a helluva lot better, IMHO.

But to stay on the subject of this post: I was surprised that Richie Rich's THE GAME sold way better than NIXON PRYOR ROUNDTREE! NPR was a way better put-together CD than THE GAME (production-wise, especially)! Just my view, though...PEACE!

Richie Rich – Game 42238 02/01
Do Soundscans subtract returns? If they do then this surprises the fuck outta me cuz this was the weakest CD I picked up in 2001. Half Thang and Seasoned Veteran were the shit. This was shit.

Jay Tee - So Cold 8039 05/01
Young Droop – Moment of Impakt 8593 06/01
San Quinn – The Mighty Quinn 7743 07/01
This doesn't surprise me. People will always sleep.... But damn, too many on these ones.... Thats a damn shame.
