Being a struggling local musician bites. It means playing cramped venues in front of unforgiving crowds and desperately trying to get your demo into the hands of anyone who will listen.
It's a life Ronald Williams knows all too well.
"This is a guy who used to be where they're at," said Williams, 31, who hosts an R&B program on Stockton's KWIN 97.7 FM.
Known as Ron DeVue, Williams is helping KWIN morning show personalities Tony Kannon and Amanda King in the station's latest effort to shine the spotlight on local talent.
KWIN is calling all rappers, singers and musicians to compete for a spot opening this year's Summer Splash concert, set for Aug. 8 at Stockton's Weber Point Event Center. The event's lineup includes Bay Area producer E-A-Ski, St. Louis rapper J-Kwon, Dirty South duo Ying Yang Twins and old-school act Timex Social Club.
The contest begins Tuesday on Kannon and King's morning show. The DJs will judge demos submitted by the July 30 deadline. The station will play the top three entries on Aug. 3, and listeners can call in to vote for their favorite.
"The 209 is going to judge who's going to be on stage," Williams said.
Artists should send radio-edited CD demos to KWIN, 4643 Quail Lakes Drive, Suite 100, Stockton, CA, 95207. Also include a photo and biography.
No other station in Northern California supports local talent by having a weekly show, much less a competition where the winner can open for platinum-selling artists, Williams said.
"This could springboard them into stardom," he added.
