"Old timers" like myself are gonna tell you to get a drum machine or some kind of keyboard/workstation with a built in sequencer for starters. i.e. HARDWARE

The kids are gonna tell you to get some ACID PRO or Fruity Loops. i.e. SOFTWARE

Whatever works best FOR YOU....is the best to use or get.

Me? I have a Korg Triton keyboard, Korg N364 keyboard, E-Mu Mo Phatt sound module, Roland MKS-50 Analog Synth sound module and various software programs that I use to incorporate samples. I just recently started experimenting with VST instruments.....which are software based synths that work with various programs like Cubase (which is what I use to record songs and create beats in), Cakewalk, Reason....etc.

Best advice anybody is gonna really give you is: Go to your local Guitar Center and play around with various keyboards....drum machines....whatever. Most of the time they are hella cool and don't mind if you're in there playin' around on shit for hours. Figure out what you like best......whatever is the most user friendly and comfortable to use.

I'd say hardware is somewhat better, if you can afford it. However Software is quickly catching up. I use fruityloops 3.56 and soundfonts from good modules like, triton, mo phatt, xv-5050,alesis etc. Drum programming is real easy compared to manualy punching them in on a mpc. Fruityloops supports direct x plugins, Vst, and other effects. The main problem associated with software is finding good sounds. If you have somewhere to get good sounds, then id say go with software.
