Henry Cavill Cast as ‘Superman’

Posted on Sunday, January 30th, 2011 by Russ Fischer

Warner Bros. and Zack Snyder have found their new Superman. (And their new Clark Kent.) And no, it isn’t Jon Hamm. The company sent out a press release this morning to announced that Henry Cavill (Stardust, The Tudors, Tarsem’s forthcoming Immortals and an actor who auditioned for Christopher Nolan’s Batman) is the new son of Krypton.
Read the full release after the break.

Ralph Damiani created this photoshoped image:
We still have no real details about what sort of Superman film this will be. The official line gives no indiciation as to what we can expect. But I think the casting will come as a surprise to many. I’m looking forward to the comments debate about what this means for the character, and to see how people will react to a British actor playing Superman. If Christian Bale can play Batman, why not?
Note that this is right in line with what we’d heard WB was looking for back in November of last year. The report then was that the studio wanted someone 28-32 and likely someone who would be “a discovery, or an actor from TV who isn’t yet a big star.” And so, ladies and gentlemen, Henry Cavill.
Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures announced today that Henry Cavill has won the coveted role of Superman, the iconic superhero.
The film will be directed by Zack Snyder, who stated, “In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.”
Charles Roven, Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Deborah Snyder are the producers of the film. The screenplay is being written by David S. Goyer based on a story by Goyer and Nolan. Thomas Tull and Lloyd Phillips are serving as executive producers.
Cavill recently wrapped production on “The Cold Light of Day” and stars in the upcoming “Immortals,” opening this fall.
Targeted for release in December 2012, the new Superman movie will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
It should be noted that Christopher Nolan is producing because he's been giving Snyder pointers on how to make Superman fit into his world a little more realistically, though it will be impossible to be completely realistic like Batman had the potential to be, and also because he was visionary director of sorts for David Goyer's script writing process.

Mystery ‘Superman’ Female Role Revealed to Be Kryptonian Villainess

Posted on Saturday, February 5th, 2011 by Germain Lussier

After the intriguing news leaked that actresses Alice Eve, Diane Kruger and Rosamund Pike were contenders for a role in Zack Snyder‘s Superman, but that role wasn’t Lois Lane, the speculation began to run rampant. Who could these blond beauties play in Metropolis? Well, Latino Review is now exclusively reporting that those ladies are up for the role of a Kryptonian villainess named Ursa. As in General Zod’s right hand woman. Read more after the jump.
Latino Review also reports that fans worried about female continuity needn’t worry, Lois Lane will be in the film and one can assume the list of actresses we reported on earlier this week are probably up for the role.
As for Ursa, she first appeared in the Richard Donner’s Superman and Superman II as one of a trio of Kryptonians, lead by General Zod, who are sentenced to live in the Phantom Zone by Superman’s father Jor-El, before breaking out and ending up battling Superman on Earth. Ursa’s most noteworthy quality in the films is her hatred of men and that she collects badges/symbols of her kills. She didn’t appear in the comic books until only a few years ago.
But if Ursa is actually in the film, the question becomes, did Snyder lie when he said General Zod was not in the film? Ursa and Zod kind of go hand in hand and while initial reports were that he was in the film, Snyder then said he wasn’t. But that was four months ago. Maybe things have changed. Or maybe it’s just a cameo for a second film, much like the original Donner films.
Either way, Latino Review’s report certainly gives fans a whole new perspective on what Zack Snyder’s Superman could be. What does the addition of Ursa do to the film? Which actress do you think would be best?
I personally think that Mark Millar and Matthew Vaughn's vision would have been awesome to see come to life.

Director Zack Snyder on the Superman Movie

by SuperHeroHype
Feb 10th, 2011"Superman needs to be physical"
SFX magazine talked more to Zack Snyder about directing the new Superman movie that will star Henry Cavill.

He said: "My feeling about Superman is that I've been a fan of the character for a long time. But the question for me was always, 'What can you do with Superman in a modern world?' And I think the amazing thing that Chris [Nolan] and David [Goyer] have created, that I'm working on now, and the reason why I was like, 'Yeah, I'll do that,' was that they found that in him. They found the why in him. That's the exciting part for me."

He wasn't able to say much more, but did add the following:

"I can't really talk about that without being kind of specific... But I can say I think Superman needs to be physical."

Kevin Costner in Talks to Play Jonathan Kent in Zack Snyder’s ‘Superman’? [Updated]

Posted on Monday, February 21st, 2011 by Germain Lussier

UPDATE: Latino Review reports that Kevin Costner would play Jonathan ‘Pa’ Kent. That was one of the few roles for which Kevin Costner seemed like a logical choice. Seeing him play a villain could have been a lot of fun, but Pa Kent will play solidly to his strengths and image. Original article follows.

Zack Snyder and company are reportedly very interested in casting Mr. Dances With Wolves, Field of Dreams and Bull Durham himself - Kevin Costner – in a key role in their upcoming Superman reboot starring Henry Cavill. Read more after the jump.
Here’s the exact quote from Deadline:
I’m told that there is heightened interest in Kevin Costner for a key role in the Superman reboot that is being directed by Zack Snyder for Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures. Henry Cavill was recently set in the Man of Steel role. I’m not exactly sure what role Costner is likely to play….
There are several roles that immediately come to mind: Jonathan Kent, Perry White, Lex Luthor, General Zod, though none of those characters are even confirmed to be in the film as of yet.
Obviously, we’ll follow this story as it develops but I think it would be pretty awesome to see Costner in a superhero movie. He’s been sort of off the radar recently, quietly working in smaller or critically panned films (The Guardian, Swing Vote, The Company Men, etc.) but he’s still a big name and would be a huge addition.
There were already rumors that Snyder was thinking outside of the box for the casting of the film – he was reportedly interested in Lindsay Lohan for one of the key female roles in the film – so while the fact that Costner’s name is being floated is certainly a surprise, it’s not totally out of the realm of reality.
Out of those four characters I mentioned above, I think I’d most like to see Costner harness his inner bad-ass and play a villain like Luthor or Zod.

Viggo Mortensen on Warners' Radar for 'Superman' Villain (Exclusive)

Now that British hunk Henry Cavill is set to play the Man of Steel, the search is on the fill out the rest of the cast of Warner Bros.' big-budget Superman reboot. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder are zeroing in on an intriguing actor to play the villain: Viggo Mortensen.

Mortensen, who is still in negotiations for Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, is said to be at the top of the list to play General Zod, the evil and super-powered scientist who was portrayed by Terrence Stamp in 1980's Superman II. If Mortensen's Snow White deal doesn't close, that would potentially free him up to make Superman. Or Universal and Warner Bros. could work out his schedule and enable him to do both.

Sources say no talks have commenced and that Mortensen is just a "person of interest," much like Kevin Costner is for the role of Jonathan Kent. The actors aren't the only ones considered for their respective roles, though they are the ones most seriously talked about.

Snyder is in the midst of meeting actors for not only the role of Zod and Kent, but the three female parts well. Given the Nolan pedigree with the Batman films and the tenpole nature of a Superman film, the roles are considered some of the hottest and most-desired in town.

Warner Bros. had no comment.

I wish they would make a Superman film like the All-Star Superman comic. Embrace some of the more goofy aspects of Superman (Krypto, Fortress of Solitude with robot servants, multi-colored Kryptonite, The Bottle City of Kandor, etc) to their advantage.

Or do something really impressive and make a movie version of the last Superman story.

Zack Snyder won’t look back: ‘There’s been no other Superman movies’ [Updated

When Bryan Singer took moviegoers to Metropolis in the 2006 film ”Superman Returns,” he paid careful homage to the hero’s cinematic past. Don’t expect that approach from Zack Snyder, who on Wednesday shared his guiding principle: ”Respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.”

Snyder’s version of the Man of Steel is scheduled to reach theaters in December 2012 with Henry Cavill in the title role, and the director said that this will be the first modern Superman feature that will truly break from Richard Donner’s landmark 1978 film, which shared its star, Christopher Reeve, with three sequels and then also deeply informed Singer’s 2006 film, which put Brandon Routh in the iconic blue tights but tapped into both style and story elements from the work of Donner and Reeve.

“Literally, the one thing that everyone can start to think about is that we’re making a movie that finally goes with the approach that there’s been no other Superman movies,” Snyder said. “If you look at ‘Batman Begins,’ there’s that structure: there’s the canon that we know about and respect, but on other hand there’s this approach that pre-supposes that there haven’t been any other movies. In every aspect of design and of story, the whole thing is very much from that perspective of ‘Respect the canon but don’t be a slave to the movies.’”

Superman by Jim Lee (DC Comics)

I mentioned to Snyder that in hindsight the Singer film might have been boxed in by the past and too tentative — the movie seemed at times like a cautious curator trying to move around among fragile museum pieces. “Yeah, and we’re not afraid of that at all,” Snyder said. “Our Superman, he’s got things to figure out, but he’s a physical cat.”

Snyder’s next film, “Sucker Punch,” which he co-wrote with Steve Shibuya, opens in theaters on March 25. The filmmaker is in intense preparations now for the Superman revival (it will likely be titled “Man of Steel” but that decision isn’t final yet), which will begin shooting soon with a script by David S. Goyer. The cast will also include Diane Lane as Martha Kent.

[Updated at 7:23 p.m.: A previous version of this post listed Kevin Costner as a cast member, but his involvement with the project has only been rumored.]

Henry Cavill will be Superman (Warner Bros.)

On further casting Snyder would say only: “There’s more to come and I think it’s consistent in its … awesomeness.”

I told Snyder I was interested to see how he and his wife and producing partner, Debbie Snyder, would collaborate with the producer team of Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas – another married couple who have put themselves at the center of the Warner Bros. present and future when it comes to blockbuster ventures. Nolan, of course, directed the two most recent Batman films, which many people consider the pinnacle of superhero cinema, while Thomas has been the producer of every Nolan film, including last year’s “Inception,” which was nominated for the best picture Oscar.

“It’s been really great,” Snyder said of the collaboration so far. “Chris is awesome. He’s super-respectful but super-helpful, too. You can’t imagine a more generous [collaborator] … once he sort of got what I want to do with it, he was like, ‘OK,’ and once he said, ‘You know what, that’s awesome,’ now he’s 100%. If I say, ‘What do you think of this?’ he’s like, ‘That’s awesome,’ and then there’s a great give-and-take about it, a great conversation that we can have about it and making it better every day. And by the way, he’s hilarious too.”

Snyder said he can’t contain his excitement when he considers the paradox of Superman at this point in time — as the first signature superhero, the character has an unrivaled legacy and appeal, but as far as live-action film goes, the Donner version and Singer’s spin-off define Superman for contemporary moviegoers (although Kirk Alyn and George Reeves also flew across the silver screen in the 1940s and 1950s).
Christopher Reeve as Superman

“Superman is the one constant in the universe,” Snyder said. “You know that if you do Superman right — or at least if you do him with respect — you know you end up with something great. … [but] in some ways [beyond] that is virgin territory. No one knows what that is. In some ways Superman is the most recognizable superhero on the planet but also the most unknown. Just what he can be? People have preconceived ideas about him but probably all of them are wrong.”

I asked if Snyder had anything he could share about the costume that Cavill will wear. ”I can’t say — although I appreciate the question. I’d love to talk about it. We’re going to have to show it before we shoot, probably a while before that because [otherwise] someone will be on the set and get a picture of it.”

Snyder sounded a bit weary, and that’s no surprise considering the impending release of “Sucker Punch” and the world-class pressure of getting Superman off the ground for Warner Bros. I asked if he ever looks at the size of the task and gets intimidated by the sheer scale of it. “It is epic. But you just start with page 1, shot 1 and the next thing you know, you’re in it. And then you can’t go back. It’s the journey of 1,000 steps, as they say.”
