Truly CA: Our State, Our Stories[#201]
Nuestra Familia, Our Family
Nestled in a central coast valley and surrounded by lush fields, Salinas is known as the salad bowl of California. But these days this dusty farm town is terrorized by violence - in the form of fierce gang warfare. This brutal but riveting documentary exposes the history and underground world of California's notorious Nuestra Familia gang (Our Family). Ironically, the NF originated in the prison-based Chicano pride movement and the Central Valley's agricultural fields. Now the NF has grown into a powerful criminal organization, run military style by 'generals' and 'captains' -- who recruit foot 'soldiers' in towns like Salinas to deal drugs and murder their rivals. The film profiles some of these street soldados, as they follow in their fathers, uncles, and brothers footsteps in 'the cause.' Overwhelmed by this crime epidemic, local police call in the FBI, who launch an investigation dubbed Black Widow to break down the NF power structure and pin murders on not just the street soldiers, but the top brass as well. Meanwhile, people in Salinas decide it's time to take their town back. Grieving mothers and ex-gang members work to keep the kids off the street, and away from the deadly gangs. By Oriana Zill de Granados.
