Leave it to a teen to knock R. Kelly for a loop.
Now That's What I Call Music! 19, the latest edition in the world's most popular hits compilation series, used its star power to erase the competition this week, including two-week champ Kelly.
The 20-track Now 19 disc includes Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," Coldplay's "Speed of Sound," Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc.," Will Smith's "Switch" and the Backstreet Boys' "Incomplete," as well as a trio of Latin artists led by Shakira's "La Tortura." It sold 436,000 copies for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures.
Now 19 marks the seventh Billboard 200-topping debut in the series' history. The Now! series is the only non-soundtrack, multi-artist collection to ever occupy the number one slot on the album sales chart, and all 19 installments have debuted in the Top 10. To date, the series has sold more than 50 million copies in the U.S. and 135 million worldwide.
Meanwhile, after two weeks on top, R. Kelly's TP.3 Reloaded dropped two spots to number three with 83,000. Mariah Carey's The Emancipation of Mimi, now in its 15th week, climbed to number two with 90,000.
The week's other Top 10 debuts came from estrogen-powered acts. Carly Simon moved 57,000 copies of Moonlight Serenade, her fourth collection of updated standards, to land at number seven. And the R&B duo Mary Mary sold 57,000 copies of its self-titled album to follow at eight.
Another strong debut this week came from B5's self-titled disc, which sold 44,000 copies at 19. Likewise, with the film hitting theaters next week and Jessica Simpson's sexy video already heating up the cable channels, the Dukes of Hazzard soundtrack charged into the 43 spot with over 26,000 copies sold.
Jermaine Dupri Presents...Young, Fly & Flashy Vol. 1, the artist-producer's first release since aligning his So So Def label with Virgin Records, sold 21,000 copies at 43. Dupri, who claims the lead single 'Gotta Getcha' on the label-highlighting compilation, also had a hand in two other Top 10 discs this week. He produced Bow Wow's latest album as well as a handful of tracks for Mariah Carey, including her number one smash "We Belong Together."
Two Latin artists also made waves this week. Ardientes' Beto Y Sus Canario sold 21,000 copies at 62, while Thalia's El Sexto Sentido sold nearly 15,000 discs at 63.
Other noteworthy debuts included Christian rockers Thousand Foot Krutch's Art of Breakingat 67, D.H.T.'s Listen to Your Heart at 78 and the Best of Guy Penrod at 92. The Essential Michael Jackson, rush-released in the wake of the pop star's court victory, didn't prove to be an essential buy, debuting down at 128, but it was slightly more popular than The Very Best of Emmylou Harris, which entered the charts at 133.
Here's a rundown of the Top 10 albums for the week ended Sunday:
