As expected the 49ers released a pair of veteran players as the 49er careers of J.J. Stokes and Junior Bryant officially came to an end. The 49ers also added some depth along the offensive line with the addition of veteran guard DeMingo Graham.
Stokes was the 49ers first-round pick in the 1995 draft after a stellar college career at UCLA. Plagued by injuries early on, Stokes’ best single season was 1998 when he caught a career-high 63 passes for 770 yards and eight touchdowns.
He leaves his 49er career with 327 receptions, 4,139 yards and 30 touchdowns in 111 games played. Stokes was replaced in the starting lineup last season by Tai Streets and closed the year as the 49ers third receiver.
Bryant has not played since a career-ending neck injury suffered against the St. Louis Rams in the third week of the 2000 season. A nine-year veteran, Bryant originally latched on with the 49ers as an undrafted free agent from Notre Dame. He closes his career with 83 games played, 206 tackles and 13.5 career sacks.
Graham spent the 2002 season as a member of the Houston Texans where he started 11 games at guard. A four-year veteran out of Hofstra University, Graham recorded 27 starts with San Diego before joining the expansion Texans.
