DALLAS -- The 20-year-old son of former NBA player Nick Van Exel has been charged with capital murder in the death of a close friend, Dallas police announced Thursday.

Nickey Maxwell Van Exel was arrested Wednesday night and jailed on $1 million bond in the death of Bradley Bassey Eyo, 23. Police said Eyo was found on Sunday with a gunshot wound to his upper body near Lake Ray Hubbard, on the outskirts of Dallas.

Authorities later determined that Eyo was killed at a home in the Dallas suburb of Garland and that his body was dumped near the lake, police said.

Paul Johnson, the younger Van Exel's attorney, told The Associated Press that his client told police he shot Eyo, a longtime friend and neighbor, while the two were engaged in "horseplay" with a shotgun. He said Van Exel didn't know the gun, which belonged to his stepfather, was loaded.

After the shooting, Van Exel "panicked" and moved the body, Johnson said. Van Exel also tossed the gun in a creek, and it has yet to be found, he said.

"It's a real sad situation," Johnson said. "Emotions are running high, and, obviously, we recognize that some very bad decisions were made on how he responded."

Johnson said he was contacted by Van Exel's family on Tuesday and immediately started working with authorities. The younger Van Exel has not yet appeared in court or entered a plea.

The elder Van Exel played for the Dallas Mavericks from 2001 to 2003 as part of an NBA career that spanned 13 seasons and six teams. He is now working as player development instructor for the Atlanta Hawks, a job he began in September.

A call to the Hawks' media relations department by the AP wasn't immediately returned.

Johnson said he spoke to the elder Van Exel and that he and others who knew Eyo were deeply saddened.

"Bradley was like part of the family," Johnson said.

Damn... Don't matter if it's loaded or not. Prime example to never play wit a gun, regardless cuz shit like this can happen which is why I never find it funny when folks around me are playin wit a gun. I immediately tell em to stop and folks have pointed a gun at me before as a joke to play around but I don't play that shit for situations like this. Helll mother fuckin no, u aint pointin no gat towards me. Fuckkk that. All bad. Especially for the victims family.

Then he panicked n dumped the body and gun afterwards. Sounds a little off to me or not telling the whole story.

I hope you jumped off the wall and kicked him in the head.

That's shit is stupid. I have a gun, but I keep it locked up. It's only even here to protect my family in case of a home intruder or some shit.

^exactly. Real spit.

I own 2 but it's in my safe. I dont have it to be some "gangsta" type shit. It's for safety, and safety ONLY. I do go shooting though a lot(Oregon gun laws are HELLA lenient, some states are even more relaxed bout gun laws) but that's bout it. I have been strapped in some situations but again, it was for my safety. My dudes always be wantin me to bust it out when they drunk n shit but I just tell em good luck wit that. Shit ain't funny to me whatsoever.

Owning a gun does NOT make u real. Not one bit. It just means u own a gun. Nothing more nothing less. I've met plenty of suckas that think they be on some hard ass shit just cuz they own a gun which is funny to me cuz I bet u on anyyyyything that none of em dudes would EVER pull the trigger. EVER.

Krazee that's some crazy shit lol. I'm glad nothing happened though as it coulda ended in a reaaaaaal bad way. Very smart of u to unload it. More importantly FUCK THE PATRIOTS!!!!! LOL. (u know I had to throw that in there hahaahh)

Life is too short, don't play wit guns.

i bitch slapped him as hard as i could. then he apologized lol.

That would have ended my friendship with that particular person, right there.
granted that didnt end our friendsship his drug problem did. he went from selling shit to doing all the shit he was selling and i wanted no part of junkboxes so i just stopped calling him and told him he was never allowed in my house since i'd end up with half my shit missing and him trying to make excuses about it.

yeah i didnt want to have this gun but the dude that was livjng with me at the time gave it to me for letting him live there for a minute. ever since i put the bullets in a baggie and stuffed them somewhere safe i have never had to touch them. the gun stays in my top drawer just incase i have to scare off intruders or some shit but that has never happened. i live in a kind of bad neighborhood but i been here for so long that everyone knows me and wouldnt steal from me. but ya never know i guess.
