Glen Coffee: NFL ruins a lot of lives
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 22, 2011, 7:21 AM EDT
Glen Coffee, the 49ers’ 2009 third-round draft pick who retired at age 23 after one season in the NFL, has a simple explanation for why he doesn’t ever see himself returning: He doesn’t want his life to be ruined.

Coffee told the Sacramento Bee that’s what he thinks the NFL does to players.

“As far as the NFL goes, I have a hard time putting it like this because it sounds kind of harsh, but I feel like it ruins a lot of lives more than anything else,” Coffee said. “And that goes for people who have short careers in the NFL and long careers in the NFL. Because what happens is they see that as success.”

Coffee says it bothers him that so many people have a hard time accepting that he’d walk away from the potential to make millions of dollars playing football.

“People just keep asking me that, and it’s like, ‘OK, why are you asking me that?’ And their No. 1 reason – their only reason – is money,” Coffee said. “It saddens me, man. If your only focus is money, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. A lot of people, they chase money. And when they get the money, they think, ‘OK, what now? There’s got to be more than what I’m feeling now.’”

Coffee is currently working on getting his degree from Alabama and is considering a career in ministry.

“I want to love what I do,” Coffee said. “I don’t just want to get paid.”

Yes this the same Glenn Coffee who retired abruptly from the 49ers claiming that “God” was calling him. No word on if “God” told him to be strapped with an illegal weapon in his car, but I digress.

TMZ has the details:

Glen Coffee — the former San Francisco 49ers star who recently retired after one season to pursue a religious calling — was arrested for illegally carrying a “cocked” automatic pistol in his car.

According to police in Fort Walton Beach, Florida … 23-year-old Coffee was pulled over for speeding … but cops quickly discovered that Glen’s vehicle — a 2008 Cadillac — had no registration or insurance.

Because the vehicle was deemed “unlawful to be on the roadway,” cops called for the Cadillac to be towed … but first, they ran a quick search — and found a “black 380 SIG Sauer automatic pistol.”

According to the police report, obtained by TMZ … “The pistol was recovered with the hammer ‘cocked’ to the rear. It was located in the center console … readily accessible to Coffee.”

I don’t know if Coffee thought Bishop Long was after him or whatever the case, it is never a good thing to be driving around with a loaded and cocked gun in your possession unless you are hanging out with former Jacksonville Jaguars cheerleaders.

This isn’t Boyz n da Hood and I don’t know what missionary work requires you to be holding like you were Chris Brown in “Takers”.

Maybe he has a reasonable explanation, maybe he doesn’t, but my point remains the same you never truly know who these athletes are just by what they say in the media so always take it with a grain of salt.

Hopefully the Lord will forgive him.

Why is he an idiot..He has a good point IMO...He's following his heart...Aint nothing wrong with that...
He's an idiot to say that the NFL ruins lives. No, it's you that ruined your life. Take responsibility, don't throw it off on the NFL.

That's like saying the siccness ruins peoples lives. No it doesn't.

Or Money ruins people's lives.....no it doesn't.

Its what you do with your money.

fuck glen coffee, he is a stupid fool, even if he wanted to go to become a minister, you go to the nfl cash out and use that money you make for your community and to pursue your true calling, who the hell wakes up and says: "you know what i think i wont take another million dollars" idiot, the fact he got pulled over in an 08 caddy w/o insurance/registration makes him look even more stupid, i think all niners fans should be allowed to bitch slapp him if he ever returns to the bay

I COULD SEE WHERE HE'S COMING FROM... IF YOU PLAY FOOTBALL AND YOU'RE NOT TOTALLY COMMITTED YOU COULD GET HURT PRETTY BAD AND THAT WOULD LIMIT WHAT YOU DO FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE... AND BEING A 3RD ROUND PICK DIDN'T GUARANTEE HIM MILLIONS OF DOLLARS SO WHATS THE USE IN PLAYING??
