At a disappointing 4-8 in 2011, the Washington Redskins’ season is all but over. However, for two players – left tackle Trent Williams and emerging tight end Fred Davis – the season is indeed over. Both players will be suspended four games for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy. With only four games remaining in the 2011 season, and with the playoffs well out of reach for the lowly ‘Skins, Williams and Davis can now get a head start on their off-season plans.
The two players both tested positive for marijuana and, because they each had tested positive previously (three times in total according to reports), the NFL handed down four game suspensions.
Of course marijuana is a banned substance and the NFL makes it very clear that it is against the rules. And, of course, both players failed drug tests multiple times. However, it seems a bit odd that a player – let’s say Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for instance – can stomp on an opponent during a nationally televised Thanksgiving Day game and receive a mere two game suspension.
